X3 on the bigger cooler & you can also get a deeper louverd transmission pan which holds a couple extra quarts & do both for much less than a different truck.

Even the gasser 6.0 tranny cooler is pathetic. I pulled mine off last night so I can install one 3 times the size of the stock one. That's todays project after work.

Most of my towing has been in hilly regions. I've never seen my tranny reach 200°. As far as mpg goes, the only trip I've had it on without towing was in the hills with 4 adults and one 100 lb. kid and a bed full of gear including the hitch, and it got 22 mpg. I usually get about 18 around town. It gets 11-12 towing.

Just returned from a week trip through the Catskills of NY. Pulled some very good hills, and probably 7k in TT with the bed of truck also loaded, generator, gas, firewood etc.
My temps maintained 135-145 the entire round trip. I was stuck in construction traffic maybe five minute slow down, and it peaked at 151 and as soon as we were rolling stayed 147. Ambient outside temps were 76 degrees. Speed on highway sections were 60 mph. MPG was 8.0 going and 8.9 return trip (downhill ) sorry didn't view temps in reverse, but I kept the info center pegged on Transmission temps the entire ride. Hope this helps.

I'd like to thank you for the info about your transmission temp. Quite a difference between the 2500 and 1500 trucks. Guess the 2500 has a much heavier trans and the 4:10 rear. I just got my truck back from dealer after two days. Told me nothing wrong with it and they can't duplicate the high temp. Which is obvious to do without a load. They said trans fine as long as it doesn't go 272 degrees or higher. That info they got from GM. Also it's under warranty and will be fixed if it goes. I'm going to ad a cooler before our trip. Wish I could trade up to a 2500 before trip. I've looked at them but will have to wait. Interesting that GM dropped their warranty to 60K miles from 100K. I'll let everyone know how our trip goes when we return. Leaving July 1st for 2 weeks. I pray it's a great trip with no truck issues. Again thanks to all on this forum for your advice and info.

Likely be ok, but that's pretty high temperatures as a max that they allow, but hey they know better.. Interesting re:warranty mileage reduction. I didn't even realize and it's my fifth Silverado 02 thru 15.. So I guess the 2500 has maybe a larger cooler and or beefed transmission. Like I said I'm not a mechanic, I swung a hammer for a living. I just drive em. Safe trip and as we all say just enjoy!

We just got back from heading up some colorado hills. After adding my cooler we never cracked 200 and most of time was at 175. With stock cooler it was up to 260. Major difference and as easy as it is....go bigger cooler. Fully loaded trailer, 8000 lbs

Just a quick update on my Silverado 1500 transmission temperatures. As I previously stated my dealer has told me the transmission is within factory specs. So for peace of mind I was going to have a trans cooler installed. The dealers do not install them. They also informed me that having one installed will void the factory warranty should the trans go out. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place. Waiting on GM to call me back to confirm this but three dealers have said the same. Will let you know what they say! Perhaps I'm just being over cautious but 252 degrees in reverse seems high. Pulling it runs at 196. If anyone with a like truck has monitored your trans temp in reverse I'd appreciate knowing. Again I have a 2014 Siverado crew cab 4x4 with 3.42 rear 5.3L engine. Rated to pull 9600lbs. Trailer weighs 6200 and total weight about 7200.

Well I spoke with GM customer support and dealers are correct. If you add a transmission cooler to your truck and it goes out the warranty is void. Ouch! My truck has 29K on it and 100k warranty so no add on for me. I'd rather GM pay for it. Hopefully no issues until I am able to trade up.

Have the dealer show in the warranty that the aftermarket transcooler will void the warranty. Only way they can deny it if it is WRITTEN into the warranty. Verbal is not worth the air it takes to talk. I check my warranty and nothing in there forbids me to put on an aftermarket product.

Well my transmission temps kept running in the 200s and I couldn't get an answer from the dealer or GM. Each trip out they seem to run higher. For peace of mind I've traded up to a 2500 Duramax. Pick it up this Monday. As U guys have said you can't have to much truck. We didn't take our trip to Colorado. Lightening struck our house. A mess but insurance is covering it. Rescheduled trip for first two weeks of September. I don't forsee anymore truck issues.

Good move, and congratulations on the Duramax. I drove mine to work a couple of days last week and made it a point to check the transmission temperature. The temperature here was around 90, and the transmission temperature was 131.

Traveling in Montana today up/down 6% grades for a good part of it & my trans never got over 179. You won't regret getting the Dmax & congratulations.

Wow nice truck, You will not be sorry.
I think it's a lot of bull re:cooler/warranty.
I had a cooler installed by a Dodge dealer last year, in my Ram 1500 never a mention of warranty. I still operate that truck towing camper on occasion.
My other truck is the 2015 2500 is 6.0 gasser 410 gears, and as stated earlier posts I run 135-145 max.
I'm taking another Trip tomorrow and will try to remember to view while in reverse.

I have a 2016 GMC Sierra SLE CC 4x2 with a 5.3 and my tranny will hit 210 215 up long hills towing around 6000 pounds. Average temp on tranny is 190 after warming up. I pickup my 18 Sunset trail 271 RL this Saturday it weighs 5500 dry. So this will be interesting to watch the tranny temps
