Buy a diesel 2500 HD. You'll be much happier and never look back.

I have no trouble towing with my 1996 Chev S10 four cylinder five speed. Of course for saftey sake I added ranchero shocks air bags and a heavy duty clutch

Sounds like a true RED NECK out fit to me!!

I think the original purpose of this thread has been totally lost with the BS that has followed the op.

Probably true but I am still hoping Frank will post some pics of that TV.

I don't remember any more what that Duramax was rated for as far as hauling and towing capacity, so I can't say positively, but I think my present TV is just as big as that old 2500 Duramax.
The'03 2500HD Duramax had a payload rating (5er pin capacity) of ~3300 lbs. This got decreased by the weight of passengers, fuel, truck cargo, etc. The GCVWR or GCWR(Gross Combine Vehicle Weight Rating) on the same truck was ~22,000.

The 2013 F150 has a GCWR of 10,400 - 17,100 depending on the actual configuration of the vehicle. See http://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/specifications/towing/for full details. Remember the GCWR includes pasengers, truck cargo, fuel, trailer, and all trailer contents.[/QUOTE

This perked my curiosity enough that I started searching back through some of my old records. This is what I have for my old Duramax---
GVWR---9200#
GAWR-frt.---4670#
GAWR-rr.-6084#
GCWR----17200#
Curb wt.----5631# (I'm assuming that's dry wt.)
I found an empty weight, but I think I had a generator, water jugs, and of course the hitch has to added in there----7200#

So, all in all, not much different then my present TV.
Hope this helps clear things up.

I believe the GCWR you show is incorrect. That is actually the tow capacity for a fifth wheel trailer (again, depending on the truck's config).I found reference to this on severalinternet sites by Googling 2003 Chevy Silverado Tow Capacity.Add that to the curb weight and you will get the GCWR (22831 using your numbers), which may be a little high. There is no way a F150 can tow 17,000 lbs.

GCWR for a 2003 Duramax was 22,000lbs. (Truck and trailer total weight). Max tow was listed at 14,700lbs for 5th wheel and 12,000lbs conventional with a WDH.(assumes 1 operator and limited payload.

GCWR for the properly equipped new F150 is 17,100lbs for 5th wheel towing. Subtract the total truck weight with occupants and fuel and extras from GCWR to get max tow capacity. Let's say 6,000lbs for the F150 then max trailer weight is about 11,100 to 11,300 depending on crew cab, super cab, etc. for 5th wheel and conventional.

2003 Duramax has 3,500lbs more capacity.

Hope this simplifies it.Edited by: WildWildWest

Thanks!

Let's get back on track...Are we to assume you already own a 1/2-ton pickup?

If so, check your truck's equipment (rear end, tow package, etc) and make sure it is capable. If it is, keep it and see how it goes with a few short trips. Trailerlife.com has tow ratings for many years.

You will know pretty quick if a bigger vehicle is in order.

I have the 25RB towing with a 03 Z-71. I tow it fine. I am not setting any speed records mind you. I consider myself a defensive driver. I never tow over 70 mph. Mostly 62 to 68 on the interstate. I use the tow haul button and my transmission shifts accordingly. It WILL pull down in hills and strong headwinds. It will downshift and RPMs will go up but it does it and rides a bit rough. I don't feel it is dangerous as I drive it accordingly. That being said, do I wish I had a bigger TV? Yes, but that is not in the cards right now. I am sure you can do it with a half ton. Would you be happier with a 3/4 ton? Yes, if you can afford it.

Get at least a F350/3500 and I never pull over 55 MPH, I'm retired and not in a hurry, slow down and see the scenery. It's all about the journey their as well. I don't go but 300-350 miles a day and then stay over at a park, usually a State Park.

my F250 would probably be over on pin weight with that trailer but my truck is extraordinarily weak on payload for a 250. It is all relative to the particular truck you buy. Pay close attention to the specs of the truck you look at. Double check the tire loading sticker inside the door for that trucks specific payload limitations. Double check they're weight, gcwr, gvwr, and rawr ratings before you buy.

I would doubt very much that your f250 would be over weight with the trailer the op was talking about.

Are you sure? My f150 has more then that. You would think an f250 would be built heavier then an f150.

According to the Ford Truck Body Builder Layout Book your truck's payload is from 2500 - 2600 lbs.

Here's the link: http://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas/...9/maintoc.html It has the specs for f150's thru F550's
