Wheelbase

My lease is coming up on my truck and I have a decision to make. Without going into details my current vehicle is an F 150 with the larger bed giving me a wheelbase of 157”. I am looking at a new F 150 but it has the smaller bed and a wheelbase of 145”.
My TT is a 32’ Z1 and I have not had any issues towing with my current vehicle.
My question is, how much of a difference will it be towing if I were to go with the new vehicle and the shorter 145” wheelbase?

Length
35.92 ft. (431 in.)
Dry Weight
7,270 lbs.

Payload Capacity
2,414 lbs.

GVWR
9,684 lbs.

Hitch Weight
884 lbs.

That seems like a lot of trailer back there. If you are fully loaded, or, even a little over, at 15% on the hitch you could be at 1406# or maybe a little more.

Maybe check and see what the new truck is rated for.

Both trucks make the rating right at 11,000 pounds. I am wondering how much of a difference it will be will 12 inches less of wheelbase.

That I can't answer.
Maybe some of these guys that are towing a trailer that long will eventually chime in.

Do they both have the same hitch # rating?

Based upon past experience's the shorter the wheelbase the easier it is for the tail to wag the dog. Just my opinion with a camper that long I would want the bigger mass. I would be looking at a F250. But that's just my opinion.

Thanks. Unfortunately the 250 is beyond my price range. I have 9000 miles pulling my TT with my current F 150 and have never had any issue. We have had it in the Smokey Mountains multiple times as well as the Rockies. Would the 250 be better? Yes, just not an option.

Is there a reason you want or have to go with a shorter wheel base?
If your old truck handled it OK, I guess I would want to stay with the longer wheel base.

I guess I will go into the details. I can purchase my current vehicle when the lease is up. Currently, Ford is running 0% financing and they have some 18’s left on the lot but all have the shorter wheelbase and I can get it for a lower price than a 19. Even though the 18 is more money, because the financing rate is zero, for a little more money each month I can be in a new vehicle with no miles and a warranty.
If the 12 inch shorter wheelbase is going to be a drastic difference I will stick with my current vehicle.

If you want to stick with a F150 I would consider getting the MaxTow and/or MaxPay package considering the size and weight of your unit. I am under the understanding that the MaxPay is only available in the 6 1/2 ft bed.

Both vehicles have the Max Tow package with the 36 gallon gas tank and 3.55 rear axle.

I have approximately the same trailer and the shorter wheelbase Ford. I bought my truck used and was looking for all the extra towing and payload capacity and all I could find was the shorter wheelbase. Although on paper, I should be able to do everything right with it, I think I would have preferred the shorter cab, longer box and wheelbase. Not haveing the latter configuration to compare the two, I couldn't give you first hand knowledge but all the literature and blogs support the benefits of a longer WB when pulling that long of a trailer. IMO

I have a short bed 2014 f150 EcoBoost. Pulls my 271RL, 31ft with no problem. The newer f150 EcoBoost pulls even more weight. Around 13000lb. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

I ended up going with the Super crew with the 157” wheelbase and 3.5 Ecoboost.IMG_0009.jpg
