Yeap...in years 2001-2004 the Chevy 8.1L with 4.10 gears had a higher tow rating than the 6.6L Duramax diesel. It was only around 100lbs or so due to the weight of the diesel.

Good thing I said that "generally" a diesel would have a higher tow rating, course with the same axle ratio the diesel does have a higher tow rating, but 4.10 ratio was not available for the Duramax.

I'm afraid I didn't explain the brake controller very well. Of the total weight (both truck and trailer) the recommended trailer weight is 60% of the total weight and the truck would be 40% of the total weight. So if you had a set up of a total of 20,000 lbs, the trailer could weight 12,000 lbs and the truck 8000 lbs.

Thanks, that certainly makes a lot more sense and probably a lot closer to what many setups run (well, those pulling fivers).
