Used RV trailer

Thinking of buying a used 2016 Sunset trail 32BH for $22,000. What are the thoughts on the price and any suggestions please. This will be my first RV.

We have this trailer. Love the layout. Issues we had were 1)front cap fade - painted under warranty 2)annoying outside kitchen sink drain setup - it does not tie into the gray tank 3)Outside kitchen door has gotten out of alignment a couple times. Can't speak to the price. Actually, the dealership I bought from here in Ohio has one for sale..asking a bit more than what your looking at so take that for what it is.

My first suggestion is in the form of a question..what do you plan on towing with? I ask because I towed for two years with a half ton and it really pushed the limits of the truck. This trailer is light but is long. I was under the stated capacities by hundreds of pounds however when traveling cross country, it was painfully clear we needed to upgrade our TV (tow vehicle). We upgraded to a super duty truck and now realize we really needed something more substantial. Others may have different opinion and experiences on this setup, this was mine.

Feel free to PM with other questions. Love to help

Thank you so much. I have a half ton Chevy Silverado LT 1500 with tow package. I'm concerned about the length and towing capacity if I got long distances.

You’re pushing the limit of your 1500. Specs show just over 7200 lbs with tongue weight of 914 lbs. check your payload capacity of your truck. My 2013 Silverado is 1531 lbs. tongue weight is included with payload capacity which is you, passengers and box cargo too.

660catman is right on here..I've been saying on this forum for quite a few years..the half tons keep getting more powerful and towing capacity keeps creeping up but the tongue capacity is the achilles heal of every model. You can check in with some of the folks that pull 5vers with their 1/2s with no problem..but that is pin weight in the bed.

just remember that 7200 is dry. With all your stuff and addons, the weight creeps up there quickly.

Believe me.. this trailer with a 1/2 will pull fine down the street and trotting around town, but I can tell you..crossing the continental divide and high winds out west..gets dicey real quick. we drove Ohio to Montana..have a pro-pride WDH, airbags, suspension upgrade..yada..we were going 50 mph max over a couple days with some weather and serious ascent/descents.

Our F150 Ecoboost was fine power-wise..it was keeping both trailer/truck in the lane at highway speeds when those winds kicked up.

For what its worth, you might look at the SS289QB. Much lighter, similar floorplan and might be able to buy new close (within a couple K) to what that 32BH is going for used.

I tow a Zinger ZT260BH with my truck. It’s 6200 dry with a tongue weight of around 880. Once I got WD hitch set up correctly, LT LRE rated tires and overload springs it was much better to tow. Biggest change was the tires. The P metric are crap for towing heavier trailers. I find towing at 55-56 MPH in 4th gear ideal. Truck has 5.3 6 spd 3.42 gears.
So yes, find a smaller lighter camper or a 2500 truck.

I was curious about that floorplan of the SS289QB and it is much lighter..5661#. you might want to take a look. Our 2011 300BH was similar. you losing some space in the bathroom and the door, swapping rear couch for booth setup, but dropping around #1500 and 3 feet of trailer.

Thanks I was thinking of getting the rear air bags and up grading the hitch also. But I hear the same thing your advising, to go lighter ' etc.

If you have the tow package, I would think your truck has the class 4 hitch.
If that's the case, there is no way to upgrade. They don't sell a class 5 for half ton trucks.
You probably have a sticker like this on the hitch.
Even if you could tow that trailer without maxing out the hitch, I think the length would be the big issue. Side winds and semis would more then likely create havoc with you. White knuckle all the time, and that doesn't make for a safe or pleasant experience or vacation. Let alone not being safe for you, your family or anybody else on the road.
This is just my suggestion----go smaller with the trailer, or go bigger with the tow vehicle.

I hope your not disappointed. We went through this with a good many trailers and had to rethink the weight issue. If your search the forum there are links to towing calculators that helped us. If you PM me I can send you the links.

You’re probably already aware of this however I’ll bring it up.. the sales people usually will tell you your tv will pull whatever they’re trying to sell you. Unfortunate but happens too often.

The most expensive trailer is the one you can’t use to go traveling without white knuckling or driving in the slow lane at 50 with your flashers most of the time.. like from Davenport IA to Bozeman MT [emoji11]

Happy Hunting.

I just went through this with another forum member. He ended up with the 336BH. He loves it.

The advice given out if from everybody is from own experiences. I use to pull with a 1/2 ton truck pulling TT and 5ers. You have to remember stopping is also a big decision when pulling a camper. Like has been said if pulling on level ground you would probably be fine except with the already stated truckers blowing you around. If you plan to drive in the mountains I personally think it’s just to hard on a 1/2 ton.

I know I’ll probably catch a lot of flack with this, but I think your pull vehicle should be rated for twice the dry weight of your camper.

Yeah, that statement deserves a lot of flak.

Appropriate only if one has a hoarding problem and collects gold bars. [emoji1787]

I’d go more like 1.25 - 1.5. Safer the better

I went from a 150 to 350. So guilty as charged.
