You might have 50 amps on each leg, but you can only use a total of 50 amps. Is that correct?

I'm not an electrician, so I'm having some difficulty wrapping my head around just how you get 100 amps out of a 50 amp breaker panel.:confused:
Maybe somebody who is qualified could jump in here...
