I'm curious to know if it was a valve at the back...

I'm curious to know if it was a valve at the back of the tank and if you have the same valve arrangement that I illustrated in this thread.

You mentioned that all the valves are open. Are you sure that the bypass valve is closed on WH and not open. If it's open, it's unlikely that you'll get much hot water. Look at the back of the WH...
