Its a good idea to check,the e brake, pull the key & try to pull the trailer, the wheels should be locked up. If they don't lock up you'll need the check brakes or battery power to the little box.

It's a good idea to test the e brake, pull the key out & see if you can pull the trailer, the wheels should be locked up.

The trailer end of the cable is connected to a type of key plugged into a small black box, once the cable is pulled it pulls the key which SHOULD\MUST lock up the trailer brakes, you put the key back...

Once the emergency cable pulled the brakes should've locked up, unless you didn't hook that up either.
