I have a large whole house filter on mine. I dump the water after each trip and put some 1% peroxide in to kill any bacteria before the next use...the large filters call for 15,000 gallons which to me is a year's worth of camping. Now having said all that...mine is clear and I can see in it...and I will judge it by what I see inside...for example if you camp at state or national parks where the water may be from wells, then I would change it more often, to be safe...my filters only cost $8, and that is cheap protection for me. On another note I am camping next weekend at a CG where I got there brochure and it stated in there "our water pressure is 75psi, so you should use a pressure reducing device for your own safety" that's the first I've seen that but I always use my reducer anyway but for some who don't, it is a notice to pay attention to...FWIW
