Well I started camping about 30 years ago. I have gone from tents, to truck campers, pull behinds, a Class C, to two 5th wheels. My wife and I have recently sold our 32 ft three slide 5er, sold the 2500 HD and are now dropping back to a 2012 Colorado Chevrolet and a popup camper. For us; we had lost some enjoyment in the camping lifestyle. We had began to spend more time watching a flat screen and finding it difficult to get our unit into some places we love to camp or wanted to camp at. We had decided to get out of the camping lifestyle; but after some talking we decided it wasn't the camping we were tired of but more the way we were going at it. We've always wanted to stay at Ocracoke off Hatteras N.C. but never would put the unit on the Ferry. So, don't get me wrong, and I'm certainly not knocking anyone that lives or camps in big units. It's just a choice we've made. We are for the first time in years getting really excited about this upcoming camping season in our Popup. With ideas and new smaller campgrounds we want to visit. Were like two little kids. Yea, maybe we have lost our minds. We have changed our camping slogan from " Roughing It Smoothly" to " Popping Up Some Fun" So, if you see a small red Crew Cab Colorado pulling a popup through the eastern part of the US states it might be us. Lots of fun to everyone and Happy Camping.

Ted, I think you are completely sane. There are so many camping options. I agree with you that "camping" in a rolling condo isn't really camping. It is more like traveling in a luxury mobile hotel suite that can stop at interesting places.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to RVing whether it be pop up or the largest DP Class A. The idea is to just get out there and enjoy life. Not all of us like to hike, fish, hunt, bird watch, etcand that is fine. But, there really is something to being in your RV on a clear, gorgeous star filled night that connects us all to something bigger than ourselves.

Go for it and happy camping!

Ted, If we were just camping we would have a smaller setup also, likely 4x4 with a small TT. Enjoy your time out camping the way you want and don't worry about how anyone else views your approach.

We bought out dogs from a gal in Henderson N. C.
I am extending an invitation to the Northeast Crossroads rally, in May 3, 4, 5, 2013.
Although you now have an SOB, all are welcome.
See the thread in the rally section.

Hi Ted. All the best to you. Fun and good times are what you make them. We went from tent to popup to a 5er. Avid Kayakers and hikers ( Nova Scotia, Colorado, Alaska). We decided it was time for a more comfort. When I see a couple pulling a popup wit a couple of kayaks or canoes on top I do get a pang for that style of camping. Hope you have a blast we will keep an eye out for you in the East.
Go Well.

Have fun. Some of our best memories are of the years we camped in a popup with our daughters when they were growing up. Lifestyle is a matter of choice--Enjoy.

Hey Ted:
Sounds like you have run the gauntlet of campers pretty much the same as we have. We also found in was near impossible to get into some of the campgrounds we like to frequent with a couple of the bigger rigs we had. All tho we downsized to our present rig, we didn't downsize to the extent you have. We are very content with our little 5th wheel. It serves us real well, we can get into all the NF and State campgrounds with it, and if we had the desire to winter in a warmer climate, it would do that also.
If this is what makes you guys happy, good, go for it.

Ted,
We too started out with the pop-up and have fond memories of being at all the state parks with the kids. Once they grew out of it and the career called, we lost that momentum. We have gotten it back again and much like you are looking forward to the coming year. We hope we can have as much fun as you do.

Good luck,
Jim

I started out to buy a tear drop trailer, made the mistake of taking Janet. Her comment was if you think at our age I am going to a shower house at 2 o'clock in the morning you are nuts. Ended in buying the Zinger lot less money. Than that evolved into the Cruiser. Kind of wish I would have we had gotten that tear drop at times

Congratulations on your new set up. I have a lot of good memories of camping in a pop up as a kid and also when we first got married some 20 years ago. I keep thinking I want to find a good clean pop-up to buy for father/son camping trips. I my son is just getting to the age where it would be a lot of fun.

There is nothing crazy or insane about what you are doing... You do what makes y'all happy, that is all that counts in this world.... Most of all enjoy each others company and have fun.

The last two time out last year for me I did not hook up the satellite dish... Just listened to the radio and nature sounds.....

If you would have stopped camping, that would have made you crazy. Enjoy your selves.

I'm looking at a calendar with a quote from Steve Jobs on it;

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life"

Sounds appropriate to me. Keeps me on track at times.

We started with a popup, albeit it was enormous. Had convertable bath/shower. Kids got bigger so moved on to a hybrid with quad bunks, now in a 300BH.

Miss the pop-up, but only on warm sunny days.

If were just my better half and I, I think the pop up would work, but she's not going back to the public shower houses either.

It's not HOW you camp,
It's THAT you camp.
.
Like most, we started in tents, then popups. Didn't like the idea of the bath house at 3 AM. That's when we got the first TT.
Our current one, at ~25', is as big as we need.
.
Keep on camping.

We trade in our pop-up next week when we pick up the new 270BH. Served us well for many years even though it was the most basic thing you'd ever seen (Livin Lite Quicksilver 10.0). Bright yellow painted aluminum trailer with ALL canvas top on bimini supports. I just can't believe how much stuff we had in that thing, we mastered the lightweight, minimalist camping.
Looking forward, nervously, to the new adventure and, Ted, I hope you and your wife do too!!
