We recently went on a 3 week trip and discovered that our second 30 lb. propane tank would not give us any fuel to our appliances. Up until now I have been refilling our first tank on a regular basis but on our extended trip it ran out and the second tank would not give us any propane.I tried swapping the location of the tanks in case the male valve on the second tank location was defective. The result was the same....no propane. Both tanks were filled at the dealership this spring when we purchased the 5th wheel (2011 Cruiser CTX 26RKX). The first tank, once filled, works fine. Also, the expiry date on each tank was 3 years apart. (Yes, years)
Any ideas?

Is it possible your second tank was in fact used up and is now empty? Pour hot water over it and feel the propane level of the tank.

I thought of that too Stan but I double checked that at a refill depot and they assured me the tank is full. (Quite a difference in weight between a full one and an empty one)

I would then play with the switchover regulator valve. Maybe it somehow got stuck in an "off" situation. Try moving the lever back and forth. Other than that, I am out of ideas.

It may be the valve on the tank. If it is not really opening the results you describe would be true. Out in the open,away from any flame or spark source, crack open the valve and see if it releases propane. DO NOT PUT YOUR HAND IN FRONT OF IT!!!! you will get a freeze burn. If you have a gas grill it would be better to hook it up there and see if the valve opens.

Try a different bottle from your grill or borrow on from some one and see what happens.If you swapped the bottles and no gas would come out of the second bottle and than put the first bottle back and it worked, it has to be the second bottle.There is a type of flow valve that stops the gas in event of high flow but I don't know if that is the bottle or the regulator.

All new 20 and 30 lb bottles have the OPD valve. That's the one with the big out side threads. And you can't check them by opening the valve. Nothing will come out, that's one of the "features" of the new valve. It has a cutoff valve in case of a large flow (open valve). I have a propane generator and it uses a large line. When first hooked up to a bottle if you open the valve normally because of the large line it will shut off. Have to crack the valve and open slowly.

Close the valve on both tanks. Go inside and open the stove valve to bleed off any pressure, close the stove valve. Go outside and slowly open the valve on the "bad" tank. Go inside and see if you have gas. If you open the valve too quickly you can activate the safety valve.

Please see the attached article.

It seems that those POL's can be a problem when they think they mistakenly think that there is a problem.
I wonder how many regulators have needlessly been swapped out?

I have tried all the above 'fixes' and still no propane. I think the valve on the tank itself is defective. I will take it into a local propane dealer to have it checked out and hopefully the CR dealer will reimburse me for the time and new valve under warranty.

Normally if you take the tank in question & solidly thump in on a hard surface,Hold it by the handles and drop it hard from a few inches still holding the handles and kind of hammer it straight down. That will normally free up a tank valve. If you changed positions it undoubtly is not the change over valve. In Rving with bottle gas over the last almost 50 years I have yet needed to replace a gas regulator..Just saying.. Jb

Thanks John;
I did the 'thump' as you suggested (I also found this same advice on other propane forums) and at first it did not work but the other forums suggested that I drop it from a height of 12 - 24 inches. I carefully did this and guess what........I now have propane!!
