Two days ago my wife went to bed about 11:00 and she then announced that our bed had disintegrated! This is the kind of thing that kinda gets your adrenalin going...11:00 at night....250 miles from home.....and it appears that we will be spending our nights on the floor on an air mattress. So I go check it out and we noticed the headend of the bed was lower than the foot end but the camper was level. We pulled the mattress back and found the entire head end of the bed frame had disintegrated! There is a 2 x 2 screwed into the main wall of the slideout and it was completely ripped out of the wall leaving ripped wall covering and rather large holes from the screws. With no support for the head end, the main plywood bed support fell down in between the two outside bed supports pushing the bedsupports away from their fixed support position. I unscrewed all the screws on the piano hinge on the head end and removed the broken 2 x 2 with the screws hanging out. The we tried to push the plywood board back up to the wall but it wouldn't move. We lifted up the main plywood board and found that the lift pistons would not allow up to move the board. However we also discovered that the 2 x 3 boards fastened underneath for additional support were all pulled loose. They had initially stapled the plywood onto the support 2 x 3 but they all pull out with minimal effort. Let me tell you about the very fun time of working on this thing with a kingsize mattress in your face at all times. In desperation I was able to position 6 x 6 blocks (that I had for wheel chocks and jack stands) under the head end of the plywood and luckily they fit perfectly. Yesterday we wrestled the mattress out of the bedroom and had a chance to get a good look at the damage. I bought a box of ringshank nails, borrowed a hammer, and reattached the plywood to the 2 x 3 supports underneath. I removed the lift pistons, positioned my 6 x 6 blocks under the head end and slid the plywood back up against the headboard.
When I get back home next week of course I will take it to the dealer but under no circumstances will I allow that bed to be re-built the way it was. I know I could fix it right but the Kingston is 6 weeks old and I did not buy a fixer-upper.
My idea for a permanent fix would be to install a 2 x 4 on the head wall rather than a 2 x 2 and attach with 2 screws per stud rather than 1. Then I would position upright pieces of 2 x 4, maybe 3 per side and 2 in the center to provide additional support rather than relying on the 1 x ? to support the bed.
As a final note, when the bed isn't collapsed we absolutely love it. We are not FAT people (well maybe a little extra but not THAT much),and NO, the bed did not collapse do to "excessive activity."Edited by: calliopeguy

Ken, I wonder if during construction or shipping that someone had stacked a significant amount of weight on the bed. Our PF3SK is similarly constructed and we have not had one single issue with our unit in 5 years and we also have a heaver euro foam mattress with a down topper. If you have a digital camera, I would make sure pictures of the damage got back to the factory.

Dan - Glad to hear you've had no problems. Do you have a King bed? This is my first King bed and never realized how nice it could be so I won't go without it. The changes necessary to beef up the current design would take little work but I don't think its possible to remove the plywood sheet to do the job right. It's just a very large area with no support at all in the middle and even a couple of "legs" in the middle would probably prevent this problem from happening again. I'll talk to my service tech on Monday and see what he recommends. I did take photos of everything but I'm still on the road so when I get home I'll see if they show what I want and if so I'll post them.

It's not just the king beds. My queen size has done the same thing. It's started to buckle pretty bad. Just waiting for the wife to fall through before I get to fixing it. I have a couple of ideas, one being rebuild the frame with aluminum square tubing to keep the weight down, or building it with 2x2's and removing the shocks and putting drawers in instead.

Our bed just pulled away from the wall also. Anyone figured out a way to fix this without a major overhaul. Gotta love my Kingston!

It's unfortunate that you apparently don't have a good RV technician available. My RV-tech (Kroubetz RV, Lake Crystal, Mn overhauled my bed and I can now actually plop my 230 lbs onto the bed and it is solid. After my bed collapse I think what caused it was the screws missed the studs in the slide wall. It wouldn't take much to pull a screw out of the paneling. My tech beefed that up and then split the bed in the middle with the piano hinge and put a heavy brace sideways across the middle. You can't use the head end of the storage anyway. It's not a major project but I paid too much and I've only owned it two months so I AIN'T FIXING IT. We have now hopefully accomplished our mission, one entire weekend of camping without a problem!

Our Seville queen bed squeaks on my side whenever I sit down or turn over in the night so I'm guessing that this is one of the signs of imminent collapse, lol, hopefully I can talk hubby into beefing up the frame before we end up dealing with it at 11:00 pm, which would be a total pain in the butt.

My king bed did exactly the same thing. Repaired the whole thing in a couple of hours. Hardest thing is to get the mattress out of the way. Whole structure is held to the wall by a 2X2 and 3 screws into wallboard (usually they miss the studs). Replaced the 2X2 with a 2X4, used adhesive and six screws into the studs to attach it to the wall and built a support for the piano hinge. aluminum angle works for this. We are full timers and haven't had a problem since this fix.
Just to let everyone know, pull your mattress back away from the headboard before you raise the bed to access the storage. If you fail to do this it pushes on the wall pushing the bed assemby away causing the failure. This is what is causing the 2X2 to pull off the wall.
Regards, Tim

We haven't used the bed in our Seville yet but I'm in the process of building an aluminum frame to hold an IKEA Laxeby spring set and memory foam mattress. Our bed sat on the slide so there was no weight on the hinge end when supported by the wall. I did notice that if I sat on the side, I would hear what sounded like flex so it would just have been a matter of time until it pulled off.
I'm going to have to rebuild the support box (it doesn't move when the slide comes in) to handle the aluminum with box tube bracing. I haven't figured out just how to put the gas shocks back yet but that will come. I do see a need for some sort of cross bracing so that may be where that gets mounted.
Once I get this done, I will post pictures.
As good as the Crossroads units are, the bed seems to be a bit lacking but everyone has different needs and tastes so it would be hard to please everyone. Engineering the bed mount and bracketing should be just part of normal development.
Tim, thanks for the pointer on pulling out the mattress. I need to account for that in my frame design.

Timonbik - Thanks for the advice on pulling the mattress away from the wall when lifting up to get at the storage underneath. Thats one possibility I never thought of as to the cause of the problem. However we only put the original bed cover under there and rarely use it for anything else. If anyone else needs to work on the support, we found that you can remove the mattress from the bedroom fairly easy by just folding it in half.....hope I never have to do it again
