De winterize at PDI?

We get our new trailer in two weeks and with this damn winter dragging on we are worried about de winterizing. The dealer said they would do it for free but we would have to pay to get it winterized again. They strongly recommended we didn't de winterize until the end of April which I agree.

I've already seen the factory PDI report and their intake yard inspection report and the two items listed were fixed before we purchased it. Both were minor cosmetic issues.

I know a through PDI would include testing the tanks, lines, pumps etc but is it really needed?

If it was me---I would leave it there until I was ready to go camping without having to worry about freezing it up.

I can't I'm traveling so often the weeks after I have no time to go and get it. It's a 7hr round trip to get it.

We bought our first travel trailer in May 2013. While we have only had a few issues, knowing what I know now there is no way I would short cut the PDI. I would make them go thru the PDI checklist found on this forum and take no less.

Unless you have total faith in the dealer.

Good Luck.

If it were me, I would have them de-winterize it while you are there and show you how to do it. Then you can pressurize and check everything for leaks. If it is a 7 hour round trip to the dealer, you don't want to have to depend on them to winterize it for you every year, so I would then pay them this one time to winterize it for you again while you are watching so that you will know how to do it at home. You can winterize it yourself in about 30 minutes using 2 to 3 gallons of RV antifreeze. There's nothing to it. Once they have re-winterized it, you can park it at home until you are ready to camp without having to worry about it.

I would want to see every system work and correctly before I signed off on the PDI and signed on the dotted line. Once you sign and if something is wrong it's a warranty repair which is at the back of the line for repairs. That means 2 more trips, take it in and drop it off, and then return for it.

I would explain you want to see everything work and then it be winterized again. You can watch and learn but I wouldn't pay for it. It shouldn't take them over 30 min to winterize it.

We videotaped our pdi. They showed us how to winterize and winterize as part of our pdi. If you have to pay extra this one time then it is well worth it in the long run.

It's amazing how just asking again solved that problem. They are going to show me how to dewinterize the unit test everything I want for a long as I want until I good an happy. Complete the PDI, then if needed how me how to rewinterize the unit. They are also going to help me get my hitch setup correctly and drive around with me to make sure that the brake controller is happy before coming back to recheck the hitch and sending me on my way. They have now booked a spot with power and water for 6 hours just for me. My wife and I are now thinking about seeing if there are any sites open in the area. so we can stay in it one night before dragging it home. It's a long shot so early in the year but it can't hurt looking.

Again thanks for the comments.
