I bought one of those heat resistant mats with a nice design on it to put on my stove when it is covered and use that to place pots, pans and hot items on to protect the counter tops. Though when we took it in for repair, the serviceman not thinking put all his tools on the countertop but it is a camper, but the polishing looks like a good choice, we will try it.
Our old pop up had laminate countertops and they were all warped when we bought it, as they had left the vent open and water had soaked into them, what a mess, had to have it all replaced so a few scratches are not hard to live with.

X2 on not having to worry about water damage. I keep a couple of Scotch brite pads of varying coarseness handy and have been satisfied with the results.
