Well, the there are a few options that come to mind, however, you should stick to something out in the 'burbs as a base and drive into the city if you plan to sight-see. Illinois Beach State park is nice, right on the lake and borders the Ill/WI border. Further to a west suburb, there is a KOA in Union, IL. Nice place, Railway museum really close and a cool place to visit. I am sure some of the chicago people will chime in soon. Do you also plan to stay somewhere in central Illinois or down by st. lewey??

We have a Jellystone here on the South end of Milwaukee in Caledonia. I heard it's nice. I have some students that have worked there. There's nothing else till you go North of town...a bunch. You can go West of town but again more than 15 or 20 miles. I've been to Happy Acres hwy 50 in Kenosha...not too bad. We have some nice lakes North and West of Milwaukee, some traveling though. West of Kenosha toward Lake Geneva can be nice. Chicago itself is like Milwaukee...nothing. You need to go west.

IMHO - Happy Acres in Bristol WI. , IL. Beach State Park in Zion, IL, Bong Rec Area in Burlington WI and Jellystone Park in Calendonia WI. are going to be about your best choices between Chicago and Milwaukee.

All of these places will be at least an hour drive to Chicago and within and hour to Milwaukee.

Otherwise IL. has several places West of Chicago also about an hour drive to the city. Nothing will be close.
