Surge Protection Install

Installed a Progressive Industries Model EMS-HW50C last summer and although it wasn't the easies install (because of the location) it provides a piece of mind for all the circuit boards and electronic devices we now have in these units.

We have a 335SS and I decided to place the box at the entry location next to the service panel. I removed some other panels located there and used the upper one for a storage shelf and the lower one for the box install. I did remove the power panel to allow for better access and did have to add a plywood back panel to have a better more secure mounting plate. That 50 amp wiring is heavy, stiff and not easy to work with.
This surge model also comes with a remote display which I ran up the same wall and mounted above the thermostat.

Great job on the install... you are costing me alot of money Just curious, were you able to use the existing wire and just splice the unit in or did you have to buy some extra wire to go from the unit to the power panel?
Thanks, Darryl

Darryl,

I was able to use the existing wiring. Was able to pull enough slack up to make only one cut. I think the 50 amp wiring used has a lot of slack at least in my case. Had to buy a cheap cable cutters from Harbor Freight (10" #40507 at $5.99) to make the cuts, it's not easy to work with. Just took my time and repeated some good old Army vocabulary a few times to get the job done :-)

Surge Protection Install

Finally had time today to install the EMSHW50C surge protector. Many thanks to J REN for pictures of his install and answering my questions . Install went very smooth and simple. A few pictures below.
During the install, I found the black wire on the 50AMP circuit breaker was barely on with only a few strands of wire and many of the screws holding the other wires were loose.... all fixed now, but really poor workmanship from the manufacturer.

The EMSHW50C is on the exspensive side, but is built very well and you dont have to worry about anyone messing with it. I now have piece of mind not having to worry about power surges..
Now on to the central vac and we will be ready for the summer..

Ok, got a stupid question.

I just bought a 322RL. First 5th wheel. Since it is 50A service, if I buy a 50A surge protector, either hard wire or portable, will that protect the unit if I am plugged into a 30A provider?

It would be best to call Progressive Industries and ask them. I would think it would, but it could also throw an error code since it monitors both legs of the power. The manufacturer is very open to answering questions.

Anyone put the 30 amp version in? Torn between just surge or full elec monitor that will shut down as the ems30 does. Also looking for location ideas for our rig if anyone knows

jsd493,
The 30 amp version will be easier to install than the 50, due to the fact of smaller gauge wires and one less wire to deal with. As far as location, I would try to mount it close to your electrical distribution panel which is where your breakers are located. Typically this area will have a void behind or beside it because of all the wires coming into it.
I will admit that I am completely bias to the Progressive EMS systems, mine has been flawless and does everything it was designed to do. It has protected my RV several times from low voltages (this does harm over a long period) and gives me peace of mind when I am not in the unit and in the unit for that matter. My unit stays on shore power for 6 month periods and I usually only visit it on weekends. Since I have the monitor, I always know if something happened while I was away. I can also monitor how many amps I am pulling or have available.
The Progressive EMS units are expensive, but in this case I think you are paying for an AMERICAN MADE quality product that has the support to back it up.
