I find Ford's computer to be similarly off.

I can run as fast as I want towing, so far tow anything I hook up to it. I have learned that the easyer it is on my tow vehicle the less stress it is on me. The less stress the more I enjoy traveling.
My figures are very similar with my totally stock '13 Silverado. On my trip to Talladega last weekend, I got 11 pulling my 5er uphill to Talladega and 11.8 pulling it back. The computer said 11.3 on the trip there and 12.4 on the trip back.

On the other hand, my '14 Malibu's computer consistently underestimates the mileage by about .5 mpg compared to the calculated mileage.

I'm thinking of modifying my Chevy. My local shop is offering me an EFI Live tuner, 4" custom exhaust from the turbo back, cold air intake and an EGR plate for $1,650.00. If I get it with a 5 tune vs the single tune it's an extra $200. I figured 2 years to get my money back and less if we go out west this summer. I thought that was expensive, but I forgot how much goes into getting a Ford up to Chevy standards. Just kidding well not really. I just had no idea how expensive it was.
I get 13 mpg average daily driving, 10 mpg towing and 15 mpg hwy when empty. They say I can get 13 towing and 17-20 hwy without the trailer.

Who is your local shop ? One of the "name" players in the Duramax field, or just a local shop ?

To flat out make promises is salesman talk as there are no guarantees with Duramaxes.

Do yourself a favor and join here:

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/

and here:

http://www.duramaxforum.com/forum/index.php

Get into the subforum for your generation engine and do some asking and talking before you spend your money. There are lots of folks that have done what you are planning on doing and can offer feedback on which brand components actually deliver said promises/results.

You know, on one tank of diesel I got 2.5 to 3 extra MPG simply by adding some cetane enhancer and watching how I drive. That was for a $10.00 investment, but in all honesty, it also happened to be a good batch of fuel also.

I have added components to make my truck better, in my case to cure the overheat issue the LLY's have. A tuner, a better intercooler, bigger hot and cold side pipes, the 06 air box, the 06 turbo mouth piece.

The truck runs better, doesn't get hot like it used to and might have picked up 1 mpg, might have.

It seems the MPG figures our trucks get vary wildly truck to truck. It just seems to be luck of the draw.

My point is, doing a little research on the forum will not cost you anything but a little bit of time.

Run the actual numbers on the payback. Figuring 13 MPG avg now and going to 16 MPG avg. with mods.

1000 mile/13mpg*$3.50(fuel cost)/1000= 26.9 cents/mi
1000/16*3.5/1000=21.9

Saving a nickel a mile in fuel costs. Average.

$1650 divided by .05 = 33,000 mi to the break even point. After that you are ahead.

Payback never came into my 'calculations'

I was driving an 4 ton vehicle and just wanted more 'push/pull' so I got it...

MPG is SO low on the priorities and so if you need to justify a purchase don't buy it

SO FAR, we can still do what we want with our 'stuff'

Sorta, DPF delete is a federal no-no as is any mods that change the smog equipment.

"Bert" was talking about mileage and how it could pay for itself. That's why I posted the numbers

I agree with johnboytoo, I have a 2011 RAM and tuned it with a smarty. I think it improved my mileage without towing by about 3 miles a gallon, but with towing I didn't see a difference. I bought the program more for when I might need the extra get up and go then for the fuel savings. I don't pay attention to the fuel mileage while towing, I figured bad mileage was just part of the deal when pulling something and it's either get over the fuel costs or stop camping and I won't stop camping anytime soon.

I agree with you guys. But money is money and it comes into play when making certain decisions. I'm going to own the truck for a long time and if I save on fuel it helps me when camping and when I use the truck for work. I estimate if I get the savings that I think I can conservatively I can save almost $300 during our summer trip out west. That's a big deal to me. Also I've been told when tuned correctly it can extend the life of the motor. Now when done incorrectly you can ruin a lot of things.
