251TD Questions

Hello everyone, my family is in search of an open toy hauler and came across the 251TD. I have some questions that I was hoping someone could help me with.

1. How is the quality, we are first time TT buyers and really don't want to get pulled around by a dealer

2. The front deck shows 8'x8'- I have a kawasaki Teryx (2 seat). Will this fit sideways across the front? The only purpose of getting a toy hauler is to allow me the ability to take this along with my sons ATV, which can fit in the bed. Does anyone else carry a sidexside on this deck and how does it fit?

3. This unit shows to be 36' with a dry tongue weight over 600lbs, does anyone know or can you estimate how much the tongue weight would be with a 1400lbs load on the front deck?

4. And the final, I will be towing with a 98 Ford F150 4x4 with the 5.4l. The dealer swears this is more then enough for this trailer. Based on gvwr I believe the unit is around 9500, with my towing capacity at 11000lbs. Besides a WD hitch and sway bars, what else would be beneficial.

Thank you for any and all help.

Are you sure the towing capacity is that high? I thought a half ton f150 was around 7000lbs.

I'm not 100% on it, I was going off memory instead of looking at the truck. The dealer I went to kept pushing that it was 1/2 ton towable, with the length and tongue weight alone I was second guessing that. He talked about adding a 1500lbs WD hitch I believe.

I did some quick Internet search on your towing capacity. It looked to be around 7000. I would check your owners manual if you have one.
My 2006 Chevy 3/4 ton or 2500hd is 9000, with a 6.0L.
Make sure you have LT (light truck) rated tires. A lot of half tons have P ( or passenger) rated tires. A 4 ply tire will have a lot of sway.

Found this on the web.

Quote:
F-150 4x4 Automatic Transmission SuperCab

  • The 4.6 liter engine, paired with a rear axle ratio of 3.08, could haul a top weight of 5,100 lbs., while the same model with a rear axle ratio of 3.55 could tow up to 6,600 lbs. The 5.4L engine with 3.08 RAR had a MTC of 6,000 lbs., and the 5.4L engine with 3.55 RAR had a MTC of 7,700 lbs.

Wow, how could he say this unit is half ton towable then? The dry weight alone is 5668, with just my teryx puts me over.

Thanks for the quick replies and the research. I guess I'm so consumed with deciding on a trailer I failed to think of search my trucks towing capacity

He can say that because it will make you buy it. Dealer usually doesn't know or care...they will tell you a Kia can pull a 25' TT if it makes the sale.

That's only with a clamp on bumper hitch.

Hello Jkipker,

Not sure where you are at with your search as this was posted in mid-April.

1. I have a Z1252TD. It's hard to speak to the quality as this is my first camper and I've had it for a couple months. But I can say there are some things that have had to get replaced. The rear door by the bunk beds was not sealed properly. There was a huge air gap between the frame and weatherstripping. It looked like the frame was off. We have already had to replace one stabilizer jack and it looks like the tongue jack has a huge dent in it. I will say they have replaced everything so far that has had problems but once the warranty is up who knows.

2. The cargo deck is huge but you would have to determine if your toy can fit. I will say, you should also check the load. The ramps that come with it aren't not suitable for many things like my harley. They are also very short and the toys can easily bottom out.

3. My advice when calculating tongue weight with 1400 pounds on the deck is take 15% of that weight and do your math. Because the deck is high and close to the front this would be a safe bet. Then if you end up buying it and you can load it up and go weigh it all.

4. If you have 11K towing cap. You'll have plenty. The GVWR of the TT is 9400 so you should be ok. I tow with my '11 F150 Ecoboost and it does real well. I have air suspension and fixing to get some tune mods made for towing to increase mileage.

All in all, if you are on a budget and need a toy hauler than a 1/2 ton pick up can tow this is the one.
