Newbeeee Question, Where is my water heater bypass?
Hi All,
I have a new Sunset Trail 30 Reserve. Where are my water heater bypass valves? I haven't figured out how to get hot water. I need help.

they are usually by the pump for your on board water tank. My water heater is in the bedroom and that stuff is under the cover for it in there. Look around a little and you will find it.

Find the outside access panel and match up the location inside the trailer. Mine is next to the master bed on the same side as city water inlet and water heater access panel. Inside will be a styrofoam encased water heater and blue & red water lines (see pic). The lines have bypass knobs to turn. You'll likely be looking for a paneled box with screws to remove the lid.

Oh!!!! Ok! Why would they put something that needs regular access behind a panel that has to be removed with tools?

Try turning the bypass on the red line in middle that runs vertically to the opposite way it is now and check hot water. Your lines may differ if you have more tanks or sinks.

I powered on the hot water heater trying to get hot water, does this mean that my tank has been empty and I have likely burned up the element?

How long did you run it empty? If it was a good while then possibly. Go fill it up and try it again. It'll take at least an hour to heat up the 6 gals of water.

Also before you fill it go to the outside access panel and try the relief valve. If water comes out breathe a sigh of relief because you weren't empty. If the heater was working that water will be hot coming out the relief valve.

I haven't removed the panel yet. I have to find some tools. Also, a little uncertain if it will be on the side of the bed behind the outside water heater access panel or over on the other side of the bed where the on board water tank is....

It usually is right inside of where the panel is. Later, put hinges and a door latch on the panel for easier access.

Allen ...all you need is a phillips or red robertson(square)screwdriver to take top panel off, 4 screws Your dealer should have shown you this and should be responsible for showing you how to fill he water system up and getting the heater going.
If your trailer is home ...call them and have them walk you thru it..

The dealer may have told me about this.... but, it would have been better if they had actually removed the panel and demonstrated the action. I got a screw driver and removed the panel and turned the valves, both the red and the blue. Then I heard the tank filling. I waited a few minutes and then turned on the switch. I now have hot water!
Great idea on the hinges and latch. I think I will do that.
Will it stop spewing and sputtering? It seems to have a lot of air that it is pushing through the hot water side, any ideas or suggestions?

It will eventually settle down. Also, make sure you have a water pressure regulator connected between the Trailer and the city water faucet. Cheap insurance to protect your lines.

I did put a pressure regulator on the water line.
I am very excited to have hot (warm) water!

When you fill it next time, burp the hot water heater by opening the pressure relief valve to release the air bubble BEFORE you turn on the heat. This will get rid of the sputtering.

Why are so many people having trouble learning how to operate the water heater. Because Crossroads evidently thinks that everyone buying a TT knows all about how to operate the water heater. My dealer couldn't even tell me how to operate the thing due to "several different floor plans" which I don't understand how a floor plan dictates how a water heater is operated.

When I picked up my tt they did not tell me anything about the bypass valves. Just showed me where to put the drain plug and how to turn on the rocker switch. I'm glad I read some posts on here before I hooked up to water.

Drain plug? I really don't think the dealer has a solid understanding how the water heater works. I called the dealer and they didn't seem to know how to operate this water heater any more than I did. This is becoming very frustrating due to what should be a simple task.
