One thing I didn't like about our travel trailer was throwing in the water hose on top of everything in the pass through storage. When we bought the fifth wheel and it had inside connections in the pass through storage, I figured I would try something a little different. Also turned out I didn't have a water filter so I decided to add that as well. Found a wall mounted hose reel at WalMArt for $14.99 and then I beefed up the access panel area around the hole with 1X2 in the pass through so that I had something more to screw into than the flimsy wall and also put a 2X8 on the back of the access panel itself for the hose reel to screw into. I'm sure I'm not the first to do this, but I was curious if the connection inside the hose reel would leak where it rotates - so far no problems.

Also decided to upgrade the taps with residential modelsin kitchen and bath and added the hardwired EMS (decided to put the monitor inside the hall closet and it's out of the way). For the most part I have been able to get a lot of good info on here and did other things like the bed modification and the oxygenics shower head. The last pic is where I ended up putting the toilet roll holder - couldn't find any area in the bathroom other than that place that didn't feel like it was in the way. I'm sure visitors to our trailer will have some comments about that one.

I think we're ready to go - we leave on Thursday, August 1st for a month down through Yellowstone, Moab, Utah and back through the Black Hills before heading north for a week to one of our northern lakes in a national park here in Canada. This will be the major shakedown cruise for our new Cruiser.

Where did you get the short hose from the connection to the filter or did you make it. Tried to find a hose reel like yours guess will try another Wal-Mart.

It's a Suncast hose reel. I got it at WalMart in Canada so maybe they don't have it in the U.S.

The short piece of hose from the filter to the inlet to the trailer came with the Camco EVO filter that I bought. I had to buy a 90 degree fitting for the trailer inlet. The other piece of hose from behind the hose reel I did make because I wanted to use drinking water hose instead of the black garden hosethat came with the reel.

Looks like I'm going to upgrade the hose reel to one for compressed air. Just enough of a drip under this one that I had to put a tray there to keep water off the carpet in the pass through. Leak is hit and miss but I think I will upgrade this fall to one designed for high pressure air assuming I can rebuild the connections to make it safe for drinking water. I'll keep everybody posted.Otherwise I may just do something a little different. This was my only concern about this cheap reel that is meant for outdoor use of course. At leat I tried it. I really love the ability to roll the hose in and out - very handy.Edited by: WildWildWest

I've been following this thread with interest to see if it did drip at all. I've had that type of hose reel before around the house and they always seemed to drip just a little. I don't think the o-rings they use seal all that well. Just a thought (I've not tried this), but you might try a little thicker o-ring in an attempt to seal the leak. I really liked this idea, just didn't know if the hose reel would leak.

That would be a good option to try. I'll attempt that first. We are on the road with it until the end of August so I will see if at our next stop I have time to take it apart and go see if I can find thicker O rings.

Possibly some Teflon tape in the threads also. I have tried both a bigger and softer washer and Teflon tape with good results....but the drip could be coming from where the hose connectors inserts to the hose too...

The threaded connections are good. They leaked when I first installed it but I tightened them and no trouble since. Just a really slight drip from the inside of the reel where the two pieces lock together with the O Rings. Pretty minor but I didn't want it dripping on the carpet so I put a small pan under it. It would probably take a week or two or evn longer to even fill the little cake pan but it keeps the carpet dry.

Hope you get this worked out it is a good mod. Are you using a pressure regulator?

I really like that hose reel idea, I'm going to have to look into doing that. Looks good

I don't know anything about them, but at Lowes yesterday, I saw a hose reel which said "no leak". It wasmade by Ames and priced competitive to Suncast. It did appear to have better connections so may be worth a look.

We use a pressure regulator, also found it helps to not turn on the tap to full at the campground even with the pressure regulator - we don't require the pressure that high.

Thought I should update this since I had an inquiry whether I went to high pressure fittings and the answer is no - not yet. Here's my comments.

I found in our last two weeks of camping last summer that by cutting the water pressure down in the campground - only turning on the water part way it virtually stopped leaking. I have a water pressure regulator in line as well but found using less than full on tap at the campground - say half that, the leak seemed to stop or I'd get about 1 or 2 drips per day and still had enough pressure to shower.

So I haven't changed the fittings and am going to see how it goes for our 1 month trip to Alaska this summer. May also be the seals are working in and expanding enough to help prevent leaks as well. I store my rig indoor heated so I didn't need to pull out the reel for winter but it does need to be stored inside in winter or protected from extreme heat so the seals last.

I cant even find a hose that doesn't leak. The one I have to use is the oldest one I have near 15 years old. All the newer ones leak badly where the hose connects into the bib on the end of the hose. I like the hose reel, I just don't see how it wouldn't leak unless one really tighten it down with channel locks or something like that maybe.
