Traveling to Canada

Hi All, We are hoping to do some camping up north in Canada next year. What are some of the do's and don'ts when crossing the boarder with the trailer? Are we allowed to bring food and drinks back and forth? Do they go through the trailer when coming back into the US? looking at crosing the boarders at the top of Vermont. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks, John

John when we use to go up (twice a year) on fishing trips, we stopped at the border crossing going into Canada. The agents usually asked numerous questions. Main one being, what our purpose was for coming into the country, and how long we would be there. Also wanted to know how much food we had along, and what we were bring in as far as alcohol. If they thought you were lying, or trying to cover something up from them, you were pulled off to the side and questioned further, maybe even searched.
The agents are pretty well trained in human reaction and behavior.

Also we were asked if we had any firearms with us. They are "not allowed" at all.

Coming back into the US, pretty much the same thing. Maybe not quite as severe. I have seen vehicles pulled over the side and everything emptied out on the ground. In one instance, even the seats were out on the ground. That was on the US side.

Most all of our crossings were uneventful, and we usually enjoyed our time spent there.

We had zero problems, crossed from Maine to NB and Ontario to upstate NY with the fiver. We had lots of food and pet food on board for 6 weeks of travels. Just a few questions and we never got out of the truck. We also crossed several times back and forth in just the truck, again no issues. As long as you have passports and records for any pets and answer questions straight forward you will be OK.

Do not try to take an fresh fruit into the US. I lost all of my just recently bought fruit at the Vermont/Quebec border crossing (going south). The US Border guard told me that even if the fruit had been bought in the US it could not be brought back in. I would not worry about loading up the camper with too much food - we have grocery stores up here too!!!!! Booze - different story - very expensive in Canuckistan - bring yer own!!!

Better check Canadian Border Services web site as far as bringing booze or other stuff into Canada is concerned.

When we were going up, we were allowed one case of beer per person, or one bottle of booze per person. Can't remember how big the bottle of booze could be.
If we had more then enough food to last us for a week (I think) then they charged us duty.

Mark the picture didn't show up!

24 beer per person OR
1.5 litres of wine per person OR
40 ounce bottle of liquor per person.

This is what an American can bring into Canada. Virtually the same for us returning from the USA back to Canada.

I can understand why a person would want to bring booze from the U.S. into Canada, as it is soooooo much cheaper in the U.S., but for some reason the U.S. border guards ask us if we are bringing booze into the U.S. Who would do that?

Not being a beer drinker, I cannot relate to that. I have heard that Canadian beer has a higher alcohol content.

I think Al posted that for the benefit of us US citizens for when we travel across the border into Canada.
