I ran my fireplace a little on our maiden voyage, but it was warm so really didn't need it, but it seemed great and pumped out the heat. My husband went hunting this weekend and it is cold at night and wanted to use the fireplace. He switched the water heater to gas and turned on the fireplace. It went on but no heat and then the temp gauge said Er. Crossroads did not include a manual for it and I have no idea who the maker is. It doesn't say on the unit at all. Anyone have any ideas what to do. We just had it in because they installed my a/c completely wrong and they fixed that now we may have to take it in once again - argh.
Sounds like you may have a different fireplace but on mine there a heat temp adjustments.
They are rotating dials for min to max temp. If I rotate to total min I get no heat just an imitation flame. I also have two levels of heat adjustment. Also I have no temp gauge so this may be no help to you. Hopefully someone with your specific model will reply Check this post on the forum. 29SS Water Heater Vs Fireplace
It may solve your problem.

If it is like mine , (If I remember ) you hold in the button with the flames and the temp # will increase to about 80 then start back at 63.
