Mirror closet doors

We have mirror closet doors in our bedroom, and they are at the very front of the trailer. When we bought the trailer, there were clear plastic clips on each side of the frame to hold the doors in place for travel. They get brittle when cold, and before long, one of them broke. We left it like that for a while since the local dealer did not have the same item in stock.

When we had the factory service done, we mentioned it, and they replaced both of them with black ones which are more flexible. I guess they are too flexible, because I find that the doors do not stay fastened in transit, so we are basically back to square one.

The service manager at the local dealer says he just uses a board on the floor to keep the doors in place, much like you would secure patio doors. My husband is resistant to that idea for some reason. He wants clips that work. I say clips either break or fail to work, so give it up.

My question is: is it even necessary to secure the doors in transit, or can we just continue on like we have? Are there any instances when doors have actually broken in transit because they were not fastened?

When be bought the trailer new, there was a strap to secure the recliners at the rear (they are turned sideways for travel) and also a strap to keep all four chairs secured to the dining table. Neither of these proved to be necessary so we don't use them.

I have seen where some use magnetics mounted on the door and ito the frame to hold them close.

Our unit came with this type of latch and they work very well to keep the doors closed for travel. Just pull them up when you stop and the doors slide freely.

You definitely need to secure the doors, otherwise you risk them falling off the track and/or breaking the mirror.

Here is a link to the magnetic latches that I came up with.

They have worked great for 4 yrs and are now on our new Cruiser. They will not scratch the coating off the door frame like the OEM latches and will not damage clothes or body parts. I may have one more set laying around somewhere.

Scott,
You likely have wood framed doors and those latches are ideal in that case. But installing them on steel framed mirror doors is a problem.

Ye, that is true, glass can be a bit harder to drill into.

Thanks, guys. Our door frames are metal, so the latches won't work but the magnet things might.

Larry, the magnet ones - where did you buy them? The Youtube video shows them in use, but not where to buy them.

I can attest to Larry's latches. He designed them and had them manufactured. I got some from him in 2010 at a Texas rally and they work great. (Thanks Larry!)

Here arre som options http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss...+door+latch%2C

You can sometimes find the plastic ones at an RV supply or service center much cheaper. Read the reviews at Amazon some won't fit all doors.

I tried a set of those before making my own. Same description except the "new durable die-cast handle" was still plastic and it broke the 1st time I used it, so beware.
