My tank takes about 45 minutes to get fully hot on electric (10 gal). I think the newer units the light stays on. On mine (07) the light only comes on if there is a problem. Someone with a newer unit may correct me. Do you get hot water when on gas? If so, you may have an issue with the the element.

Chrisdon,
What you may want to make sure of is that you have the line open from hot water into the lines in your unit. My red light stays on all the time, as I believe it should, telling me it's on. But, I forgot to open the line to the whole unit and after my first cold shower learned quickly what the setting should be. They told me all the angle cocks should face in the same direction, on the water lines that is. Hope this helps some.

We had our new 31BH out this weekend and got about 3 seconds of warm water. Checked everything, then checked the valve...not open. Once I opened it no problems. Plenty of hot water. Our light stays on all the time also.
