Tires

Just ordered a set of 4 Maxxis tires - ST235/80R16 - will have them balanced when I have them installed on the wheels. I'll be all set for next years travels.

The Maxxis will be replacing Master Track Power Touring tires. I think they are made by Unicorn tires. I could get the same brand for a lower price but I have read good things about Maxxis tires.

I had one tire that was near the wear mark on the outside edge of the tire so I decided to replace all 4. They have been on the trailer since August of 2011. I figured we put about 15,000 miles on the tires.

tires

I suppose I should replace my tires, even though they look brand new??? They're 2004 tires with less than 400 miles on them.

If they are the original tires, I think you are and have been living on borrowed time.
It won't be long before the damaged caused by a blowout could cost you more then a new set of tires.

Especially if it sits in one spot flat spotting the tires. The uv light will deteriorate the tires and they will start to crack. Like Lloyd said you are living on borrowed time. Invest in a good set and consider LT tires.

Obviously good advice from Lloyd and Mark. Tens years is old for tires for all the aforementioned reasons. Start shopping.

Wow. I agree with the above, if you have ten year old tires, pull it slowly and carefully to the nearest tire dealer and replace them! I'd say replace them in three years if it sits outside and five years (max) if it doesn't. Inspect them regularly for signs of dry rot. I can't imagine a ten year old tire not having dry rot.

Towmax?

Bob, In your quest for the perfect the perfect tire did you hear anything about Towmax?
The original Duro tires wear down very rapidly especially on the rear axle. The dealer sold us one TOWMAX last spring and it seems to be holding up very well. I like the tread pattern as it’s much like an all season tire.

The trailer was towed new(265 miles) to the protected site (trees), and has been towed to indoor pole barn storage (6 miles away) for the past 9 years. The suckers still have the nibs on em. I will get new skins in spring, just to play it safe, and see if my farm buddy can use these like new lookin oldies on his hay wagon, or something.

No further than you are towing each year I would just keep using them and go slow. The damage caused by blowouts is much worse the faster you go. Make sure they are aired up and ease over to the storage spot. If one blows at a slow speed there may not be any damage.

Of course if you are planning on changing the routine and going on a long trip replace them first.

Have a similar problem with the two curbside tires in that the outer ribs have worn down to a marginal height. What does this indicate? Have always kept them up to 65lbs and don't believe I have done any thing to knock them out of alignment. Just wonder if the road crown has some effect on them?

Ram Boy

I had the alignment checked on mine - mine checked good.

Check the suspension bolts - I found most not torqued to spec.

I think the road shoulder side tires seem to wear on the outside tread more. Someone may be able to back me up on this.

I even rotated the tires from one side to the other this spring.

Mine are load range E 16 inch tires and I keep them at 80 lbs. I check the pressure frequently - especially when the outside temp changes 15 to 20 degrees.
