Glad they are covering your issues with the walls. Turkey vultures pecking at the rubber roof, that is a new one. Maybe you could get a decal of a mountain lion to stick up on the roof.

They are ugly birds.

They are ugly birds, but they are a necessary evil. I'm trying to post a picture of the damage so you can see it, as well as a picture of my entire set-up, but I'm not sure I'm having much luck.

Well, I can't officially say that I am because they are a protected bird under the migratory bird act, but I am making life extremely uncomfortable for them at the moment. Hopefully they will find somewhere else to roost.

How bizarre is that? Did you actually see them tearing up the roof?

I didn't, but my wife did. She said there were about 20 of them perched on top of the unit picking at it. She let the dog out, who then chased them away. Vultures are very destructive birds and are increasingly causing more and more problems for people. I have links that others have sent me about damage they have caused to homes and boats. You can get a special permit through U.S. Fish and Wildlife to hunt them if they are causing damage to property. I haven't gone that route YET.

Just a little interesting tidbit of info, they actually vomit on their legs. Their stomach acid is more volatile than the carcasses they eat (I guess that would make sense) and to clean off the bacteria on their legs from the dead animals, they actually regurgitate onto their own body.

Another tidbit, their fecal matter is poisonous to animals and young children. Same stomach acid that they use to clean themselves is also in their poop which is really dangerous if ingested.

I tell you, I've learned more about these birds than I ever cared to know. I just hope that I can scare them off with some loud noises (bottle rockets, among other things) and encourage them to find something else, somewhere else, to destroy.

Hey anaro, you better watch for those turkey vultures in your neck of the woods. You'll be sending ant out there with a broom.

We have a lot of them around here as well. I know of two roost trees that died from all the poop. One of them just fell from wind. I have seen these nasty critters come out of a dead cows belly!
