Glacier National Park

Time to start thinking of our summer trip. We will be going for a 12-14 run to Glacier National Park, and possible a run into Canada. I need input for a good campground to use as a "base camp" for the Glacier area.
Any ideas? We will be coming out of Minnesota.

We used the KOA in St. Mary in East Glacier two years ago as our home base. OK campground and since we are usually out touring, horseback riding and sightseeing, it was a decent place to call home base. Close access to the Going to the Sun highway which is a must drive!!

I also highly recommend heading North into my home country and checking out Waterton National Park in Alberta. Very nice place to stay and lots to do - many Americans come up there every year. I think it's one of my top 5 most beautiful places to visit in Canada.

Make reservations ahead of time, nice parks fill up with the holidays (schools out). Bring your passport also, just in case. Canada side is nice also.

If you want a full service site in Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, you should book in advance and it can be done online. I'm not sure if they open up until early April for reservations but they tend to fill up fast so it is recommended you reserve early. You would be searching for Front Country Camping at the "Townsite" Campground.

Plus--make sure you go "both" directions on it.

We stayed at:

Mountain Meadow RV Park & Cabins Hungry Horse, Montana
www.mmrvpark.com

We were there in mid-August of last year. The red bus tour was great! (Crown of the Continent Tour)

We headed to northern Minnesota (Detroit Lakes) when we left - we stayed Miles City at to split up the trip to MN:

Miles City KOA.
1 Palmer Street
Miles City, MT 59301

If you are thinking of Yellowstone too - 431 Miles from from where stayed outside north Yellowstone to Hungry Horse

Rocky Mountain RV Park & Lodging, LLC
14 Jardine Road
Gardiner, Montana

We stayed at Mountain Meadows, nice sites and liked the layout of the park. Lots of trees. Close to the park entrance. We looked at Columbia Falls RV park also. They were packed, no vacancy. Its also a very nice and popular park. We were in the area last summer (2013). Just make reservations or at least call ahead. Area fills up, especially when school lets out.

Thanks all,

Unfortunately, we had to push back our trip till next year, but you've provided good info for us to plan all year long.

Some campgrounds mentioned not on our radar, so this was super helpful.
