I just went thru this today.

Why is it someone mentioned no pink antifreeze in the tanks? Or was that just mentioned for the fresh water tank? How much antifreeze gets ran down the traps? Will this protect the black and gray tank valves from freezing?

I made sure to flesh those tanks well and left them empty after my last trip.

It's just the fresh water tank that you don't want anti freeze in. Just make sure to drain it out as best you can. There is room for expansion.
The black and grey tanks will be OK if they are empty. There is enough room in them for expansion for what little doesn't drain out. The anti freeze poured down the drains is more to flush out any water left in the p traps and protect them.

Great Posts

Thanks great info. I winterized last month through you tube and forum search. I also took pictures and listed out my process for next time. I did the air compressor at 30 psi and was surprised how much water remained after draining. I then pumped in the anti freeze. Like mentioned before don't forget the sani t flush (i just used air) and the outside shower and kitchen. Make sure your outside fridge is off and cleaned also.

Once you have it set to for winterization take a picture and save it with your checklist. Have a picture that show pre-winterization so in spring you can ensure

Question about blowing out the lines. Should I do anything with my valves (Hot water bypass, etc..) before I blow out the lines, or just leave the valves in the current operating position?
Thanks,
mike

Not saying my method was right but when I blew the lines I first drained the water heater and left the plug out of the bottom of it. I then cycled both bypass valves while blowing out the system. A small amount of water trapped in a valve can freeze and ruin the valve.

I drain/purge with air in normal, then switch to bypass before adding antifreeze

Hey Everyone,

Ok, I did the winterizing today. Not difficult at all. A few things I noticed an a few questions.

1. I was surprised at the amount of water that came out when I blew out the lines.

2. Instructions say to put some pink stuff in the sinks/toilets, etc... Should I stop up the sink before I put it in? What's the purpose of putting it down the drain anyway. Won't it just wind up in the gray tank?

3. Speaking of the gray tank, should I pour a gallon or two down the gray tank? How about blank tank, anything pink stuff in there?

4. Someone mentioned something called Sant-i-flush or something like that. What is that? I have a black water flush on my black tank. Is that the same thing?

Thanks again to everyone, all of your comments were very helpful. And a special thanks to Jason who looked at all of my photos and told me what each valve did and what to do to them.

Mike

Anti freeze in the drains flushes out any water that's left, seals them up and stops any odors from coming back up from the tanks. Leaving a little in the toilet will keep the seal lubed and soft.

If you drained the tanks, I don;t see any need to pour anti freeze into them.

The flushes for the black tank are one and the same.

1 There is a lot of footage in the water lines.
2 You want to fill the P-traps in sinks and shower.
3 You can add pink to the grey and black however there is plenty of room for expansion if any residual water freezes in the empty tanks so pink is not necessary Pour some into toilet to cover the seal so it will not dry out.
4 Yes. Some folks also add pink through the black tank flush and also the outside shower.

Hey Mike, thanks for starting this tread as it helped me out when I winterized a week ago.
Since we have the same model, your pictures were invaluable. I just hope I turned all the knobs the correct way. Hey, I turned on the pump and pink stuff ended up in all my hot & cold lines, so I at least got most of it correct.

Thanks to all who responded to this, us newbies learn a lot from all the experience shared here.

Jeff --- glad it helped! Thanks for much for telling me, It's nice to hear. Hoping for any early spring so we can get camping soon. But it sounds like it's gonna be a cold winter. Particularly for folks in the midwest and central states.
