New (apparent) leak

We have been getting some heavy rain here in the panhandle of Florida, and I noticed this morning some water dripping from around the skylight over the bathtub. Hoped it was just condensation, but I don't think it is. As soon as the rain lets up and it dries out a little I will check topside to see if I can see anything obvious. My question is: should I remove the flange inside the camper around the skylight to check up there? I'm thinking I might want to do that to see how wet it is and maybe run a fan on it when I get home. Also, assuming I do find where the water is getting in, should I reseal with the liquid stuff, or use the waterproofing tape? Not sure where to get the liquid sealer, but I already have some tape (forget the name, it was recommended here on the forum).

Good news is that so far, I am not getting water into the front storage compartment since I applied more "tape" to the top where the roof membrane joins the front.

I think that is a good idea to pull the inner flange off. That should allow a little better view of the area. Plus a fan when you get home.

If you are going to use dicor self leveling sealant, I would recommend removing the old sealant first. No matter which way you go dicor or eternabond tape, make sure you clean the area real good. If it's real dirty, maybe a soap and water scrubbing then a thorough cleaning with rubbing alcohol.
Good luck.

.....or, clean the surface with fingernail polish remover. Just be careful around plastic. Eternabond recommends cleaning with this.

If you choose the sealent. Dicor self leveling lap sealent is what you are looking for. comes in several colors to match your roof. same cleaning proceedures apply. just clean and apply. most likely you have some cracked sealent up there. you can usually just apply more sealent right on top of the old and fill in the cracks.

If your skylight is like mine, the inner and outer panels are totally separate from each other. So, if the problem is really a leak, it could be coming from anywhere, not just around the outer panel. So, definately remove the inner panel and inspect the top of the ceiling panel for any evidence of a water stain and path from the real source.

Years ago I had a leak at the TV antenna and the water ran down the coax cable, then onto the ceiling panel, finally showing up at an A/C outlet several feet away.

I would use lap sealant rather than tape, especially if you don't really find the actual leak.

Absolutely pull the inner one off. Mine was screwed so tight that water ran down the back wall. By the time I saw a single drop of water the damage was done. You will also then be able to see any cracks on the top one from inside. Mine has been at dealer since Nov 6th. Happy to report though that CR stepped up even though it was out of warranty.

I have had mine for a little over 2 years so it is out of warranty. We will be going home tomorrow and I can look at it then. Hopefully I can find the leak quickly and get it repaired without taking it to the dealer.

Well, I got out the ladder and climbed up to see what I could see. Actually several "candidates" in the sealant around the skylight, and even saw a couple that need attention on the other vent in the bathroom. It appears that the sealant around the skylight is not the same as the sealant used everywhere else. I saw a video that mentioned a different one was used, but I didn't write it down. I wonder if I can just put some dicor lap sealant on the holes I see in the existing sealant or if I should find out what it is and use the same stuff. Wonder too why the sealant is different.

Found both on line, but dang shipping is about as much as the product. I'll shop around a bit more. Wonder if the local dealer has it? Hmmm

I have both. the alpha sealent and dicor. pretty much the same stuff, Alpha makes the roof membrain, so they use their sealent, but Dicor will work and Camping world has Dicor in Beige. If you can drive to a Camping world or other RV supply store you will save shipping

Thanks Jason. We are finally home from our camping trip and unpacked. I'll make a run to the local dealer tomorrow and see what they have. The sealant around the bathroom skylight is really in bad shape. I saw a couple of places on the dicor that need attention, but nothing like the skylight. If they both work, I would feel better using the dicor. Almost tempted though to just use the eternabond tape on it. I really want to get it sealed before the next rain.

Other than the leaks we had a great time.

Harley, fortunately the weather has little chance of rain for the next 10 days. Thursday it is forecast to be 65F, so if I can pick up the sealant tomorrow, I may wait until then to do it when it is a bit warmer. Otherwise I do have a tarp I can drape over the top if need be.

Update on leak

I purchased a tube of Dicor sealant (about $20 ) at the local RV place. BTW, I found it for $13.95 at a place about 40 miles away. Anyway, I cleaned and sealed around the bathroom skylight and vent, inspected all the other sealant, and put a bead of sealant around the Eternabond tape I had used on the front seam for a previous leak. Also found a little crack in the bathroom skylight which I covered with Eternabond tape. We had a bit of rain off and on yesterday and last night, including some nice, steady stuff. This morning I went out and checked the skylights and other places, and found no water. So, hopefully I have stopped those leaks. The next "planned" camping trip is the end of March, but we might have an impromptu one before that.
