How to know if the manufacture is spec'ing the best axle for the trailer? Are 3500# axles "good enough" on a 26BH sunset trail with a GVW of 7700lbs?

Wondered about that also with the 5200# axles on our rig. Don't remember who told me (or if it is correct, but it makes some sort of sense) that hitch weight, axle capacity and payload equal GVWR. Maybe someone more experienced can confirm or correct what I was told.

That is correct because of the weight distribution. Your 7700 lb GVWR is shared by the axles and the tongue. I have no idea what the tongue weight of your trailer is but I would guess that it's about 700 to 800 lbs. Subtract that from you GVWR and that is your maximum axle weight. So that is why the 3500 lb axles. In Ontario, the weight of the trailer is the axle weight, that is impressed onto the road surface. The tongue weight is added to the weight of the tow vehicle. It's probably the same in Alberta.

I have the same axles on our CF30SK. My GVWR is 11300 lb. My kingpin weight is about 2200 lb (abit heavy) and my axle weight is running at about 8300 lb. These were the weights that were measured at a CAT scale. With a maximum axle weight of 10400 lb, I'm well within the maximum axle weight limit.

Yes 3500# axles are "good enough", just. Problems arise when the 3500# are made by Lippert who engineer their axles to bare minimum. Mine bent on ourdrive homefrom the dealer last year...it's a long story.. but keep an eye on them. I know Crossroads replaced a fair number of these axles for the 2011 models so hopefully they addressed the issue, it doesn't look like they put heavier axles on but maybe just better quality ones?
