We are going to be traveling from the southeast corner of Utah (Blanding area) to the Gunnison area in Colorado. Are there routes that I need to avoid, pulling a 28' cruiser fifth-wheel. Some routes look really interesting, but I don't want to get somewhere we can't navigate.
I would go HWY 70 to Grand Junction CO,then take HWY 50 through Montrose to beautiful Gunnison.
I do not know your destination and your time frame but this one great area, I suggest to drive the North and the South Rim of the Black Canyon and if possible take a hike down to the water.
US160 from Cortez to Durango is ez and US 550 from Durango to Montrose is not as bad as frequently stated. Silverton and Ouray are great places to visit. Just avoid US 550 the weekend of the bicycle race (The Ironhorse Race) from Durango to Silverton.
Another option is Co 145 that follows the Dolores River. You can visit Telluride. Then at Placerville take Co 62 over to Ridgeway and then US550 up to Montrose.
Both routes are scenic and both climb to over 10,000 ft, but the US550 route has two passes over 10K while the Co 145 route is a more gradual climb along the Dolores River.
