OK Guys, New question,

<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />

I received the new power cord from Sheila at CR this weekend....and then had an idea.

If I splice the new cord on to the existing cord....I could eliminate the need for an extension cord every time I park in my driveway.

Is this OK???

I realize the splice would have to be precisely done and be weather proof.

I would not splice a power cord together. I think you are asking for trouble if you do. If you cannot replace the entire cord just keep using the extension cord. Just my $.02.

I agree also. Where would you store the cord in your camper. A good splice would be 6 ins. around when finished.

I agree. Would not splice a power cord. Remember the longer the cord and higher the amperage draw, the more heating of the cord and drop in voltage at the trailer end. I try to never use my 30 amp extension cord unless I have to for that reason.

OK, OK, I'll be the bad guy out. I did this with our old 5er due to our local CG would allow us to "circle the wagons"...Literally! For 7 years, we'd stay from mid June to mid July and I needed the extra length to reach the post. BUT...

It has to be done right!

I've hooked up many, many submersible pumps on oil/gas platforms over the last 30 years and we've always used the following 3M Scotchcast kit for the motor lead splices. When done right, they are completely waterPROOF, low resistance and durable; and only ~1 1/2" OD. IIRC, I only saw a 2 volt drop after splicing the original power cord to a 25' extension cord, but it was more like a 8 volt drop when plugging them together (after some age...which caused me to make the splice). If you decide to do this, please PM me and I'll gladly walk you through it step by step. Naturally, the crimps are very critical, as well as taping the butt connectors and mixing/pouring the epoxy.

I would not just "splice"together a power cord.....unless it was done "right" and it sounds like Cobra909 knows how to do it "right". I personally would just use the extension. That way you don't have the extra amp draw (and resulting heat)unless you need the longer cord.

Looks to me like that would be way more expensive than purchasing a new, longer cable.

The voltage drop you may be seeing could simply be due to a lousy connector on the cable. My voltage drop adding 50' of extension is about the same - 3.5V. That gives me a loss of 1.5v for the connector and 2v for the cable run of 75'. Acceptable.
