15k AC and 2000 watt Yamaha Hard Start Capacitor

We dry camp at high altitude and haven't needed the AC. Planning a trip to warmer areas and noticed my AC pulls 1450 watts steady while running, with fridge on gas and batteries disconnected. So before I dropped another $1000 on a second Yamaha 2000 watt generator, I figured I would try a hard start capacitor for $10 off amazon.

Well as expected it didn't work here at 4800ft and 90 degree temps. It is supposed to put out 1600 continuous at 500 ft elevation, so I knew it was a stretch....but the 1400-1450 watts got me thinking. I'll give it a try at Death Valley this fall at obviously lower altitudes and cooler temps and report back.

Now off to spend another $1000.

Pretty much guaranteed you won't start that AC with one 2,000 watt generator at any altitude. They pull too much to start. Need 3,000 minimum, especially with an inverter generator.

I've seen 13.5k run by a single Honda 2000 watt at 2500 ft....but I think 15k would be tough. But the newer ACs use less amps and have softer starts. But at minimum need a hard start capacitor to get over the start hump. 1450 watts is only 12 amps....should do it....in theory...if you can get over that initial hump......and at sea level......in moderate temps.....awe heck, you're right....just get the 3000.

I added the capacitor anyway just for the sometimes weak electric at the campgrounds. Thought I'd give it a try, and post the results.

Let us know what success you had. I tried the same thing years back with no luck.

I decided if I wanted to run the AC, whether on the road or dry camping I would have to bite down and get another 2000 Honda. Everything works just fine now.

You said :So before I dropped another $1000 on a second Yamaha 2000 watt generator. If you already have one 2000 Yamaha why don't you just purchas another 20000 and a parallel kit. I assume the Yamaha's can use a parallel kit like the Honda's? Then you would have 4000 watts.

That's what I've planned on doing. I even measured the outside fridge area to see if two Yamahas would fit there before I bought the trailer.

But before I blew $1000 on another one, just wanted to make doubly sure I needed it and couldn't squeak by for the few times I would need it. Haven't needed air yet this year. This week will be the first time. Camping down at 3500 ft

On my previous trailer I could run on one 2000 Honda as long as I turned the roof knob to HI fan then quickly rotate to MED AC. Don't know what size AC was but the trailer was a 28 foot. I did the same thing most, start with one then ended up with a second. Rarely do I run 2 but it's in the truck in case it gets to hot.
