Extra battery power

What about adding a second battery for more duration? Does it need to be the same type battery? And does it need to be in parallel?

I added a different type and size battery as I only use one at a time and installed a marine style shut off. A 1-2-both-off switch.

I would always us a similar battery when doubling your batteries, i.e., wet cell, vs agm, etc.
I would also use a similar size and similar strength. A new battery will discharge into an old battery to equalize and that's not recommended.

Lastly, in a 12v system, you need to hook up 12v batteries in parallel ( positive to positive, neg to neg).
If you decide to use 2 6v batteries, you need to hook up in series to achieve 12v for use.

Here's a picture of my 12v, 103 lb each, agm data batteries I've hook up in parellel to help with dry camping.
