Intermittent "Output Shorted" Message

Intermittent electrical issues have to be the worst kind (except for fire, did that today also). My Prodigy P3 controller would occasionally give me the Output Shorted message and of course no braking from the trailer. Couldn't find anything obvious so decided to replace the wires that run through the inside of the axles. The photo shows what I found, a bare spot rubbed right through the wire insulation to the wire. Last trip I had found a bare spot where the wire had been rubbing where it comes out of the axle and assumed that would fix the problem. Appears OK so far. We'll see next trip.

That's probably a way better setup than having them slipping around inside the tube wearing off the insulation any day of the week. Truth be said I think I'll do mine this fall when I bring the trailer home. Better safe than sorry, and sorry might be putting it lightly......

This spot was the only one that was worn completely through to the wire. There were several other spots that were only worn part way to the wire.

Nice job. I hope that solves the problem. Glad you could fix it yourself.

Hey Jim, What year is your rig? I didn't see any info. I am curious, how long did it take for the problem to manifest itself?

Looks like a nice tidy fix......Great Job!

It's a 2006 Zinger 18ft. Started doing it last year, very sporadic. So about 14 years. We've owned it for 7 years. The first repair I did a few months back was the wire rubbing on the edge of the hole where it exits the axle. The rubber grommet had rotted away and left wire to metal. When I pulled both wires they were 2 different materials, the worn one was brown and the front axle was black/white and had no rub spots. I'm thinking the front black/white had been a replacement at some time before we got the trailer.

Hey Jim, you can add your make/model/year and your tow vehicle to your signature line, and everyone will know what rig you have.
