King Bed Modification

One of the reasons I bought my 212RB was for the king size bed.
However, the base/platform is about 6" shorter than the mattress! What's up with that?
This led to a few different issues. First, the bed covers kept slipping down off the foot of the bed. We were constantly pulling up the covers all night long! Secondly, even though you can enter the bed from the side, my DW always just gets in bed from the foot and that unsupported area of mattress made that difficult to do. And lastly, being tall, I did not have support where my feet reside at the end of the bed!
I mulled several options for extending the platform and decided on the simplest solution. I purchased a 10 ft long 2x6 and a 2x4 stud. The platform is 58" across, so I cut the 2x6 into two 58" pieces and then cut the 2x4 down to 58 in.
I took one of the 2x6 pieces and screwed it to the foot of the platform. I then screwed on the 2x4 to build a "stair step" support. The remaining piece of 2x6 was used as a top plate.
Before installing, I spray painted each piece where it would be exposed with Rust-Oleum semi-gloss anodized bronze paint. It matches the finish in my camper very well.
The covers stay in place, my feet have support and most of all the DW is happy being able to easily access the bed!

On my 2016 5er (queen bed), it was the same problem. We replaced our cheep mattress. The new mattress hung over the platform at the bottom about 12”. I removed the mattress, replaced the lower platform with a longer piece of plywood. I used the old platform to mark the width but cut the plywood 12” longer. Basically your feet are in that area and there’s not a lot of weight there. Had to replace the hinges and shocks to reinstall. Made for a much comfortable bed.

I considered installing a longer piece of plywood as you did, but didn't think it would be sturdy enough to support much weight extended out over the end of the bed. That's why I went with the bigger dimensional lumber (plus it was an easier to go that way versus redoing all the hinges and struts).
I also bought a 4" thick Blue Swirl memory foam mattress topper to fix the deficiencies of the factory installed mattress. But I use it under the mattress. Works best for us that way.

I did the same thing with our 212RB. I also added a king size mattress topper which added significant weight so I added a second gas spring.
