Lithium Ion Battery Upgrade

Due to my back surgery Dr. says I won't be able to lift the weights I used to. Am intrigued by the reduced weight of Lithium Ion batteries. Perfect world would be a direct swap out for my present Interstate lead-acid battery but I've a hunch there's more to it than that such as converter compatibility, truck charging, etc?. Has anyone made the switch and if so can you educate me/us about what it takes other than a lot of money?

From what I've read you'll have to get someone to pickup the pile of cash to pay for them if you can't lift anything heavy.

Russ this link might be a place to start your research.

I have read some place that nothing was needed to make the switch, but I think if you are serious, then some calls to the company you think you will be getting the batteries from would be a wise thing to do.

Sorry to hear that your back is that bad. Especially after having gone thru surgery and rehab.

Wishing you and yours all the best.

Thanks for the info and the good wishes, Lloyd. I'm about 2 weeks from being all healed up and Joyce gets new titanium left knee on Tuesday. Never seen anyone so happy to get surgery 'cause her right knee replacement went so well. We'll be out camping this fall in a 2021 Grand Design Reflection 31MB to be delivered in August

Well Russ---CONGRATULATIONS on the new Grand Design.
I'm green with envy. Which one of the other rigs are you getting rid of?
Hope all goes well for Joyce when she gets that new knee.

Lithium Batteries

Hi, I use 2 100AH Lithium batteries with our 2019 Sunset Trail 289QB trailer.

Each battery weighs 32 lbs. 100AH A Lead Acid battery weighs around 60 lbs plus range.

Size matches the Group 27 standard.

The only issue to this is the charging. Lead acid battery chargers or the trailer converter can charge Lithium batteries but not to full charge. Lithium batteries have a full charge at 14.3V to 14.6V.
Here is a link to a article explaining this:
https://enerdrive.com.au/2017/11/29/...-acid-charger/

The change I made was adding a Lithium specific battery charger. The 30/45 amp plus models range in price from $30 to $100 plus.

We really like the lithium batteries. They hold their charge when not in use and no messing (in the case of Lead Acid) with water levels etc. No maintenance.

Price is the big issue. A 100AH Group 27 Lithium battery will cost from $900 to $1300 each. Maybe with a sale you could get one for $800.

Weight - Good
Maintenance - Good
Reliability - Good
Charging - Mixed
Price - Bad

Good luck

Lithium ion batteries scare me. I have one cell phone that the battery swelled up and blew the screen off the phone. You also hear a lot of horror stories about them.

Yes I understand about safety. We got the batteries for the fall 2018 season and they are in a steel cased battery box with a lock. We have been in torrential rain storms and super hot weather and everything in between. Last season I didn't get into the battery box once as I have external battery monitors in the trailer. According to the battery mfg they have a number of safety features such a Battery Management Systems (BMS) with power terminal cut-off and recovery. Cell balancing and low voltage/over voltage protection, short-circuit protection. They are sealed so I am not too worried about them exploding due to water infiltration etc. I myself have not heard of anything terrible with these larger car type batteries? Phones batteries yes - these types no. Regards

Lithium batteries need a specific converter to charge them. If you use the standard unit it will not completely recharge them quickly or thoroughly. You paid a lot for that. Their big advantage is weight reduction and speed of charging.

Installation of a solar panel will then finish them charging.

You also should have the fancy battery monitor that uses a shunt to see where you are. A voltmeter is virtually worthless for lithium batteries. Vitron.

Your TV will do little to recharge them. My voltage from the TV is typical at about 13 volts. next to nothing.

People with minimum needs, 100 amps , can get buy for about $1500 for the first battery. $1000 each for extras.

Two Costco Interstate GC2 batteries cost $180 plus $30 for the BM2 battery monitor from Amazon. Your second best choice.
