Replace capital grille
My wife and I are looking at a 2021 SS253RB. It comes wilth a capital grille on the outdoor kitchen. We wanted to get it removed and a drawer put in place but the dealer is going to charge 800-1000 to change this out. I figured I could remove the grille and modify the metal platform and put a bottom on it to make a drawer. Anyone else attempted something like this?
Reason we don’t want the grille is we already have the 3 burner camp chef stove and all the attachments. I’d simply replace the hose with a quick connect to use the capital grille port.

Asking a dealer to help with modifying your trailer is undoubtable asking the wrong guy. Don't ask anyone if your better half already agrees with ya and just go to the table saw and cut the material you need. It's so much easier to make your trailer yourself that suits your needs. Might even be a good excuse to get those few more tools you were eyeing up the last visit to the tool store, lol... No one ever has to many of them...

Odds are VERY good the dealer would charge the $800-1000 & not be anywhere near what you wanted or of any quality, basically wasted $$ & still remodeling yourself.

I think what I’m going to do is just utilize the slides on the metal drawer and build my own. I’m sure I could match up the finish with a stain or at a cabinet place.

Good plan ZeroPro. Sometimes the best place to get a stain matched up is a paint place like General Paint, Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, etc. If you could remove a cabinet door and take that along my bet is they could nearly match that perfectly. Dealt with those people most of my life and can vouch some of those workers in the back are pretty impressive when it comes to matching stains. Show a picture when your done, other people's modifications are always another persons next winter project, lol.

We have a 2020 SS291RK which also had a Capital Grille in the outdoor kitchen. I was never happy with the grill, we had previously used a Weber Q which is far superior in all aspects. I have a Blackstone Griddle that I like for cooking on so I removed the Capital and cut out the opening, built a shelf to support the griddle and cleaned up the edge of the opening with automotive edge trim. Very happy how it turned out and all tucks away for travel.

Nice job Big D, what kind of shelf did you fabricate to support the BS? I was thinking about doing something like that also.

Thanks, I made the shelf out of 3/4" plywood which sits on 1" wood supports that are screwed to the metal shelf. I tried thinner plywood first but the griddle is quite heavy and the 1/2" ply bowed too much. Can't wait to get camping to try it out.

Picked up our 253RB on Saturday and first thing I did was turn the capital grille into a drawer. Lucked out and I was able to use the existing box that the grille came in. Just flipped it upside down and put a bottom on it. Flipped the hinges around and it worked perfect. Even added an organizer.

Good call. Our trailer has the same outside kitchen layout and during our first trip, we realized that if you are using the capital grill, you cannot open the refrigerator due to the windscreen. Not very well thought out from a design standpoint. I'm going to do the conversion to a drawer and pick up a Tailgater combo from either Camp Chef or Blackstone to replace the capital grill.

Nice job Zeroprotocol!
I also have a 253RB and have not used the capital grill since I bought a Nexgrill table top BBQ.

We are considering the Sunset Trail 253RB. What do you think of the trailer. Do you have the 12 volt fridge? Your opinion?

You would be better off and probably get a better response to start a new thread with your question.

So far we really like it. Had a few issues that the dealer took care of under warranty. We have the NX8 fridge which I don’t believe is 12 volt.
