I had this carrier built out of Aluminum to haul our Rhoads Car with us. I did strengthen the bumper mounting for peace of mind.

The bike weight is 115 lbs and the rack 50-70 lbs.

How did you strengthen the bumper? I would be afraid to have that out there like that. There is almost 200 pounds hanging out 4-5 feet from the bumper. How does that handle flex when you hit a bump going down the road?

seems to do fine, but have only used once since built. I used 1/4 x3"x 12" lg flatbarand welded on side of bumper mounts and bottom of frame . The next trip if I encounter any issues I willlet you know. So far so good. One thing the weight is evenly distributed soI don't think I'll have a problem.3 ofus got on the very back and jumped up and down and itdidn't give.It was carry it on the back of the 5er or over the cab of the truck. This was easier

Sorry for so many questions, it just seems to me like a lot hanging back there. Good job!

I saw your post about this on the "other" forum but somehow missed it here. I would love to see some pics of the bracing on the frame. I have considered doing something similar as a bicycle rack. I currently carry our bikes on a hitch mounted rack (I can't remember if it is a Thule or Yakima rack) but it seems like a lot of weight for 1 point on the bumper even though I support it with ratchetingtie downs that run to the ends of each side of the bumper. I was thinking of mounting two, 2" receivers onto the bumper close to where the bumper attaches to the camper and then fabricating something that would slide into those receivers that I could then attach a "tray" type bike rack onto (like the yakima racks).

lonnie,

i welded two receiver tubes to the frame rails.(not the bumper). on my unit the bumper sits flush with top of the frame rails. so the receiver tubes are located right under the bumper. i built a platform style bike rack for my schwinn tandem bicycle. i can also put fire wood or whatever on the platform. i'll have to figure out how to post pictures so i can show you what i did. before anybody chimes in about my chassiswarrenty, i know welding to the frame voids it. i did'nt care.

Lonnie - I put 2 bolton bumper mountedreciever tubes on top the bumper. They are mounted right above where the 2 tubing that holds the bumper to the frame. I took 2 -1/4 x 3 flatbar and welded it against the outside of the tubing holding the bumper on and where it contacts the frame and bumper. I'll try to get pictures tomorrow.

I was thinking of doing the same kind of thing. I bought 2 bumper mounted hitch receivers and thought I would mount them to the bumper at the point where the bumper attaches to the frame (at the tubular steel brackets). I figured this would spread the weight evenly and also be unlikely to "twist" the bumper as the rack would bounce while in transit. My only concern is that I want to then add a little more support to the area where the bumper and the 2 pieces of tubular steel attach to the frame. I also plan on adding a rear camera so I can keep an eye on things as we travel.

My unit came with a small auxillary hitch receiver on the bumper but I would like something more solid like the rack you have.

Spinella- I would like to do what you did but my bumper sits below my frame. Now that I think about it. I could take the bumper off, add the tubes to the bottom of the frame (and run them far enough down the frame to really support the weight) then mount the bumper to the top of the added tubing. It would raise my bumper by about 4 inches but I don't think that would be a problem. I will have to think about that possibility.

Here is one of the reciever mounts on the top side of the bumper. I bolted a flatbar on the mounted and bolted to frame with the 2 bolts holding the rear stabilizers on in case the bumper would break off that at least the bumper would stay with 5er and not out in road.

ABIT OFF THE SUBJECT....BUT WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DID YOU USE ?

I was looking at one for a hundred bucks at Sam's. Was curious as to whether the length of the trailer would affect the ability to transmit the wireless signal.

I bought a hard wired camera and monitor on ebay for 65.00. It was built by marks products in the 90's.I read that the wireless cameras don't work well for this application.

hers my bike rack . i just figured out how to post pictures so bare with me.i felt that using two 2"receiver tubes welded to the frame rails was the best and most sturdy way of making a bike rack.the platform removes from the trailer just like a regular hitch/receiver.the frame consist of 1"x1"square tube and expanded metal(mesh) to keep the weight down.the platform measures 24"x96" i also welded pieces of chain around the perimeter to attach tie downs. i think in the future i might mount my generator back there and free up some room in my pack and play area.the other bikes we bring go in the bed of my truck and the pack and play compartment.over the winter i will be mounting a "hidden hitch" in the font of my tv. let me know what you think. -ed http://www.photobucket.com/eds-zinger
