Screen Door Mod.

We love leaving our entry door open to let light in, but in our last unit I put plexiglass over the screen to help with heating and cooling. The door in our new unit is a little different - wondering if anyone else has installed plexiglass or the like and how you attached it. I'd love to figure out how to attach it in such a way that I could remove it when I want to let the breeze through.

Thanks, in advance!

I bought the thickest mil clear vinyl from Walmart and cut pieces to fit the top and bottom of the door. It is held on with Velcro. This is easy to remove when I want fresh air and don't need a/c.

Do you use self adhesive velcro? If so, do you just attach it to the door or to the screen portion?

Thanks for getting the discussion started!

When we were at the factory rally, a couple there had made a mod to their screen door with Plexiglas. They installed it with Velcro so it could be removed as needed. To get the accurate Plexiglas, she used brown paper to make a tracing of the door pieces. Then she used that to have the Plexiglas cut. I believe hers was about 1/8" thick.

Or this one using clips: http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fu...d/24310276.cfm

Good luck.

Russ, I like the idea of heavy vinyl. Another option. Thanks.

I use self adhesive and attach it to the outside door frame and to the vinyl. It's not as tight a seal as plexiglass but it is convenient to remove.

Easy to remove, and I'm sure easier to store - roll it up and tuck it away.

I did the same thing on ours as Russ-Carol.
It goes on fast and comes off fast. Then roll it up and put it away.

I used self-adhesive Velcro to attach Plexiglas cut to match the frames holding each screen section in the door on my old TT. I always left the lower section in place to protect the screen from my dogs' toe nails. The screen door in the Sunset Trail has a groove inside the frame where the screen is. I believe I can bend Plexiglas enough to slip it in the groove without using Velcro.

I noticed the groove, but didnt consider bending it enough to slip it in, although I had considered disassembling the door to slide it in then put everything back together.

Thanks for the idea!

Another idea might be to use Eisen glass used for making foul weather curtains for boats. Most upholstery shops carry it. Just add snaps and snap it on and off. When of they can be rolled up for storage. It is like vinyl but thicker.

Excellent idea and it also comes in smoked look for privacy .

You can also get varying thicknesses of vinyl in Walmart. That is where I got mine. I used Velcro to attach it.

I used clear off set mirror holders that fit in the groove on the inside of the door. The company Anchor makes a package of holders I used. It comes with small tabs that I didn't use. The offset thick part holds the lens in and the other part fits into the spline. Looks very finished. Sorry I don't have a picture but can post one later.

I went to Home Depot and asked for a few pieces of scrap plexiglass in different thicknesses to see what thickness would fit best in the grooves on ours...

when I found the perfect thickness, I went to the next thinner size so it would slide in and out easily...

cut the plexiglass 'just right' vertically and a little long horizontally to allow me to push one side in and 'bow' it to slide the other side in...

have to reverse it every couple of times to make sure it doesn't bow out and stay that way

but works well - even stays there when moving!

I never thought of doing it that way. Gotta say I like it. After seeing so many posts where where Velcro was used which is a good way in itself, I kinda fixated on using something to hold it to the frame. I measured the opening and went by the size on the package of the anchors to match the two together. Like your way
if the size was off, I'd try the next size down.

Awesome idea, cheap and quick. I just picked up all the materials from Walmart for about 13 bucks. Cut and put on within an hour and it works great! Thanks for the idea!
