what can anyone tell me about the pros & cons of a slide topper, I have a 08 CR Zinger 30BH & thinking about upgrading to a slide topper.
Not sure if it's costworthy, the ones I have seen don't seem to do anything besides flop around in the wind or collect water in rain. What is the true bene's of it.
Thanks Jay

It keeps the roof of the s/o clean and dry, I have never had to clean debris from the roof before retracting the s/o and I have never had leaves or water get into the fiver after retracting the s/o. It also shades the s/o roof to reduce the load on the A/C. Hope this helps.

Awesome devices. Just a word of advice. My Sunnybrook had Carefree of Colorado brand topper's with the full case/cover and anti-billow device.
I ordered my Cruiser from the factory with 2 slide toppers. Sadly, they installed Dometic brand A&E topper's. I am not satisfied with their quality of the fabric or appearance. But oh well.
Long story short if your buying topper's be sure they are Carefree units with the full case.

I agree with Hunter, I have them on all 4 slides, no flapping in the wind, and no worrying about anything on the roof, wouldn't be without them, but I would buy the carefree next time, the wraparound case is really nice....

We have them on ours, They keep the pine straw off and the water when retracting. I would not be with out them

Another vote for "wouldn't be without them" for all of the same reasons.

Can't imagine not having them. Small investment with a big return IMHO.

I am thinking of getting one . One question has any one opened their slide in freezing temps. I do this every winter when I head south, this year it was 10 degrees in WV when we set up camp.

I also need to get slide toppers. Had one on my Sunnybrook and I miss them on the 5ver. Every weekend I get on the roof and sweep off the tops of the slidesthen the DWputs them in. A pain to do when snow is on the slides.
I have this past winter. I put the furnace and an electric heater on and waited for the unit to heat up first. That way if there was any ice around the seals it would melt. The slides opened with no problem.

I have had both of my slides out in freezing weather with the slide toppers on them and no issues.

We bought our 04 Silverado used and it didn't have slide toppers. Â*We used the 5ver one winter and then had all four slide toppers on. Â*Quality RV (great service) in Elk River put them on and did a great job. Â*One thing that sometimes happens if you don't have slide toppers is that when you retract the slide sometimes twigs and other stuff can get caught and will distort the alignment if you don't catch it. Â*I wouldn't be without them.

Found another benefit of the slide topper this weekend, when it rains hard when sleeping, you don't hear the rain hitting roof of the slide witha topper. Woke me up early the last couple of mornings.

I agree with others, another vote to have them. Keeping the slideout roof clean will enhance the life of the seals. And getting on the roof in inclement weather would be a real mess!!

We had them on the Cruiser and now our PP and would not be without them also. I did find when I retracted the level jacks on the back that sometimes if water was sitting on top of them, I would get the bath first. Learned quick about that little surprise.
They are great and I would recommend you treat them as you would your roof and awning. We had dealership install before we bought and not sure of brand. Cruiser's last about 2 years before we got a rip in them from the sun. We did not treat them with UV protectant, and will in the future.
Good luck with your choice.

Do the slide toppers billow in the wind though? We camp in southern Alberta and we get really bad gusts of wind that will wreck your awning if you are unlucky enough to have the awning out. It seems like I spend a good majority of time putting the awning up and down when the weather turns bad, I can't imagine having to worry about all the slide awning/toppers as well if you know what I mean, also roughly what would it cast to have 4 slide toppers made, are they ready made or does the dealership have to them custom made for each model?

I guess the short answer would be "Yes, they can flap" but we've experienced several severe wind storms while camping and we never had any problems with our slide awnings. The slide awning is always under tension as the slide is being extended because the windup springs on the awning get tighter as slide extends.
