Spa floor

Today I replaced my ugly OEM ceiling light fixtures, the thread is copied below. It started as a request for input hence it's original and perhaps incorrect location.

https://www.crossroadsowners.com/for...res-15194.html

While I was deliberating about the aforementioned lights, I was in Home Depot and saw they had received a delivery of top quality 2" x 1" red cedar.

This set the cerebral wheels in motion, and I saw an opportunity to break the monotony of social distancing and do something creative in Harvey.

Six sticks of lumber and a few hours later, I presented Mrs R. with her brand new Spa floor in the shower.

I finished the cedar with a stain to compliment the walnut bathroom cabinetry, then gave the assembly a liberal coat of Varathane sanding sealer (my favorite wood treatment product). Once it was dry, I gave the entire piece a light sanding then topped it of with three coats of oil based polyurethane, also from Varathane.

The result adds warmth and a touch of class to what was an otherwise bland plastic space.

All told I think this little project cost under $50.00, and for my money, the smile it put on Mrs. R's face makes it worth every penny.

John, I bought a 12 pack of tp the other day. Wife claims it's the the wrong stuff. So I have that available for barter, plus a goodly supply of very slightly used stuff.
Maybe we can close a deal?

One of the better restaurants in town is offering a free roll of toilet paper with each take out order..."while supplies last".

It looks great. Two questions.....1. Is it slippery when wet? 2. Are you concerned at all that because the shower floor may not be flat underneath that when standing on the new floor it will put extra strain on the lower corners where wall meets floor, right where the lumber is sitting?
Ok.. another follow-up... If it is a concern, did you leave the bottom edges cut square, or did you "relief" them by rounding over, or some other means?

Hi Rrizz,

Thanks for your interest.

The finish is silky smooth thanks to the sanding sealer and poly finish. It's no more slippery than the original floor, the spacing between the slats allows the water to drain off the surface and the soles of your feet to squidge between them so traction is no issue.

I cut a radius on the upper edges of all the slats on my router table prior to gluing and screwing them from underneath with S/steel screws to four bottom rails which are spaced radially from the back wall toward the door. They are deeply countersunk into the rails then the screw holes are back filled with clear silicone.

The support rails have eight clear rubber 3/4" square x 1/4" high 'feet' on them so water can flow almost unrestricted to the drain hole and also to keep the support rails out of any standing water. They are positioned directly above the structure under the plastic pan to minimize any stress points.

I hope this description is helpful.

Makes much more sense to me now. I was visualizing the upper slats laying directly onto the shower pan. The rails underneath make much more sense to me, not only from a drainage perspective, but anchoring everything in place as well.
Nicely done.

Thanks again Rrizz,

I wasn't very clear in my initial post, but you get the idea now.

I made the floor about 3/16" undersize from all sides to allow for any possible swelling, not that I think it'll be an issue, but also to allow for easy removal to clean the pan periodically underneath.

The side support rails are set in from the pan sides about 2" to avoid the molded radius where they meet the floor if that makes sense.

Biggles-
It's an Italian restaurant...that's Amore not Revenge.

Great looking floor, by the way. Being as I live in Colorado and winterize with anti-freeze I was wondering how easy the floor would be to lift up and pour the pink stuff into the shower drain....then I realized you're in Florida and it's a non-issue for you!

Good question Coastn.

Being cedar it's not heavy at all, maybe 10 lbs if that. It lifts out real easy for cleaning underneath which was a consideration.

And you're correct, winterization is not a problem in FL, at least not yet, but then last week neither was shopping for bog rolls....
