I have added several USB outlets around the trailer over the years, but now that our grandkids are usually with us I needed even more of them (outlets, not grandkids). Our camping is mostly rustic on battery power so I'm very aware of where all my battery power goes. I currently have several different kinds of USBs and I will explain why. First one is the oldest, AC powered USB outlet, which only works when we are on AC or running the generator. It's the oldest and is low powered so slow charging.
I need more so I added 2 more that are 12v powered and also switched so no power is used when turned off. Too much work to make:
More grandkids meant more outlets. I had found several other types that I wanted to try. Version 2 is switched but is touch-sensitive so it uses a tiny bit of power when in standby (about 10 milliamps x 2 of them).
It still bugs me that I'm wasting a tiny bit of 12V power although in reality I don't think that I would even notice. But 20ma still adds up over a 10 day outing. Version 3 only has one 2.1A outlet but I like it the best. It has an actual on/off switch as well as a volt meter in the center.
Well there you have it. nine 12V USBs and two 120V. All of them have blue leds in them. The 2 touch-sensitive ones are in the 2 bunkbeds. Between the cell phones, tablets, and game pads we just about have it covered!
