welding on the camper

What needs to be done to prevent damage to electronic components when welding on a recreational vehicle?

Or is that not even a issue?

If I was concerned about it when welding, I would make sure the land line wasn't plugged in, and disconnect the batteries.
That way nothing would be energized.

Hi Allen,

I asked exactly the same question when I had my rear bumper reinforced to support a smallish Generator on a custom built tray.

The shop I used, who I trust implicitly, said they've never disconnected internal RV electronics when doing such work, and never experienced any subsequent problems.

I would think the problem (if there ever was one) would be leakage of the arc electricity through structural components and into the electronics. Since the arc is grounded near the arcing point it seems to me the circuit would be the shortest distance to the ground, leaving the rest of the structure neutral unless there was another ground somewhere. Power to the circuits should be isolated from the frame although the ground is connected to the frame. That is the only potential problem I see.

I don't think there would be an issue but it wouldn't hurt to unplug/disconnect everything beforehand.

Any 1st semester educated Wielder will use "Surge Protector" (absorber) ; across battery DC supply & line natural/ground(bonding) - positive of AC supply, to protect from EMF Surges as arcs start & break(stops.)
Wielders do it as they "Ground" ; it is a taught habit!!

You will have to excuse me. I'm sorry, but I have absolutely no idea what you are saying. Maybe you could explain it a little simpler?
Are you saying I gave the wrong info with my answer, or what?

Your answer is correct, but there is an alternative: Antizap | Goodall Mfg.®

Never used the Anti-Zap...Welded for several years...As usual have to agree with Lloyd...I think if you disconnected the battery terminals and the shore power all your electronics should be safe...

I was wondering the same thing---just not quite ready to go there ---yet.

Tommy, I've welded for years also. I was never fortunate enough to be able to go to school and become certified. Let alone make it to the first semester.

I was certified and welded in Pennsylvania Power & Light's nucular plant at Burwick Pa. and never used the devise Mark listed in his post...I must also say that was in the early 90's and things might have changed since that time...

Thanks to all of you.
I will worry less about frying the electronics on our camper now.

I've welded on my bumpers and frames and never disconnected anything. I've never had an issue.

Same here. Just ground as close to the place you're gonna weld as possible.
