Although the 335SS has lots of storage there isn't any area that really worked for us for a pantry so I decided to modify the coat cabinet that is located just inside the entry door. I installed shelves on the left side and relocated the coat hooks in the right side to hold coats and my caps. Here are some pictures.

Great looking job George. Now if you would also throw your rain coats away, maybe we could get some rain here.

Nice! Makes you wonder sometimes what the designers were thinking when they put in this stuff.

gball, just a thought,if you haven't already, you may want to install a secondary outside latch on main door to keep items on shelfs and from pushing door open. Had to do it on ours when I added slide out shelves to our coat closet.

George, I think what Daniel is saying is a good idea to keep the doors from flying open and dumping all the contents while traveling down the road. I would use something like these Velcro water hose wraps around both handles before you hit the road. I always have a couple of extra in the trailer just for stuff like this. I am sure there are plenty of things you could use to secure them.

gball, you did a real good job in your modification there. It appears the shelves are deep enough to really put something on. I like the idea of being able to adjust the shelves to whatever height you want or need. I have a pantry along side my refg and to keep the doors from opening while traveling I use a tention rod in front of my goods on the shelve. That way it keeps them tight to the back wall and no pressure to open the doors. You can use the velcro strips or I also use a bunge cord with a ball on the end to connect the two door handles. The only thing there is if the things shift while moving and are up against the door you will get a suprise when opening. I myself prefer the tention rods.

Just my opinion is all and hope it may help you out.

Thanks for the suggestions. We used shelf/drawer liner and had no movement on our trip last week. I can see where hitting a bump might cause some movement and possibly a surprise when you open the door. The shelves are 8" deep and almost 14" wide so they can hold lots of canned goods.

Thought about doing this myself. I like that the shelves are adjustable, but, how do you keep the cans from sliding off the ends of the shelves?

Here's an update on the pantry modification. We used shelving/drawer liner on the shelves to keep things from moving around. I added a small piece of moulding to the end to keep things from falling off. We just made a 900 mile trip to South Fork, Colorado and nothing moved at all. No problems with things shifting and no problem with the door coming open. All in all a great modification.Edited by: gball

I purchased all of the materials at Lowes and the total cost was around $30.

2 of Item #107805--72" Brass Pilaster Strip

2 of Item #107800--Real Organizer Shelf Clips

2 of Item #334139--8x36 Oak Flat Edge Shelf

1 of Item #41310--7'L Prefinished Amber Apron Moulding

1 of Item #1220--1/4x2x4 Poplar

The back of the cabinet wall was not as solid as I liked so I used the Poplar behind the strips on that wall to give them more stability. When cutting the strips to length make sure that the holes match on each cut strip otherwise the shelves will not be level. I cut the 8x36" Oak Flat Edge Shelf to the desired length and notched each corner to fit. Although you probably could get by without it I attached strips of the Apron Molding on the open end of the shelf to keep things from falling off. I will be happy to send pictures if you would like.

George,
Thanks for the idea and pictures. Did the same mod on our 335 before we left Texas in early July. Have about 2,000 miles so far and DW loves it; we have traveled over some rough roads and nothing has moved.

I screwed the pilaster strips to the inside of the cabinet on the side where the hinges are (about 3/4 to 1" from the wall) and on the inside of the strip in the middle where the doors close (about centered).

Photo of strips on front wall

Photo of shelf in place.
