Cracked wheel

While performing our annual bearing/brake/suspension maintenance it was discovered that one of the wheels is flawed.
Our Dealer has a call into Crossroads to see about a matching replacement.

A CRACK (800x623).jpg

We are very happy to have found this defect at home and not on our travels. This could have been a disaster.

The tire is 16"
5 lugs with a 5.5" spread
6"? or 7"? width???
3200# capacity
Offset?????

Dave, I see Amazon advertises aluminum wheels for RV's.

Not that you care but in a casting, such as your wheel, I believe that is a "cold shut" where the molten aluminum flows around the mold and this is where it met on the back side from the pour sprue. You can see a slight depression where the fissure has not opened up yet. The manufacturer did not have the aluminum at the proper pour temperature so it was slightly cool when it came together and therefore did not "weld" or flow together properly.

As you said, this could be catastrophic.

HOLY BOZO BOOTS!! Thanks for the information.
BipeFlier, This stuff is right up my alley. I spent nearly 25 years working in Industrial Process Control where a major part of my work was involved in calibration/ metrology and our specialty was temperature. Hence, we spent many days involved with heat treating, foundries and metal casting of all sorts. When time allowed and the alarms sounded you could find me in the observation area to watch the pour.
Through the years I had some close calls dealing with gas burners, atmosphere furnaces and 2300º salt baths; my hair has grown back.
Glad to be retired.

I got a little creative when I needed a big Breadth Caliper to measure the wheel width. Now I have enough data to order a wheel from "ETrailer"
16” x7”.
6 lug in 5.5”center to center.
4” center.
5mm offset.

Hey guys...remember that these rims are made in China so any quality or metering is probably non existant. Too bad .

This can be easily repaired by a good wheel shop. I had a split in my aluminum wheel on my pickup and had it welded for about $65.

Thanks for the information but at this point I just don't trust it and a new wheel is on the way from Etrailer. If money were no object we would be getting all new wheels but then would they be any better than the set I have now?

I want a quality wheel made in America and I want it made by good workers. I want to drive across the Illinois border to the Alcoa plant and walk into a factory outlet and see what I am about to purchase; BUT the factory is CLOSED down.
Apparently I want too much.
Sorry for the rant..............

Powers Tire Shop

The RV dealership tried to get an answer from Crossroads but he was sent to the distributer and then to a supplier for information on this discontinued wheel. (why discontinued??)
The manager from the local tire shop came to our residence with a real Breadth Caliper and confirmed some of my readings. Now that is good SERVICE! Obviously my wooden caliper was never calibrated to NIST Standards.
The Etrailer aluminum wheel that I ordered is close enough for the ST235/80R16 tires. The wheel measures 6.5 inches while the new wheel will be 7 inches wide. Tomorrow it will arrive with free shipping and hopefully no cracks.
I may need a new center cap.
