Hot out of cold tap and mice
Hi all, a couple of things, somehow I am getting hot water out of the cold faucet, tried doing all the valves anyway they can go and it still does it. Second thing is I am not sure how high a mouse can jump but the last time we dry camped I am pretty sure a mouse jumped into my storage area which is 36" off the ground, found a nice little pile of insulation nest to be in there. What are good mouse deterents besides traps?

Those little critters are pretty resilient.
They can climb up the electric cord and enter, water hose, tires, jacks, and anything that touches the ground and extends up to your camper.
Best advise I can give you is to seal "all" the holes in your camper, and if yours is like the majority of ours, there is a lot of them to seal.

Have you thought of mouse poison?
Is the plumbing issue an old one or did it just start to happen? Have there been any plumbing repairs recently that might have caused it? Unless it's the valves, I can't imagine something like this just starting out of the blue.

Thanks Loneoak, rig is 2011, plumbing issue is new this season, put in a new pump, didn't help. Reason for replacement was the OE pump was left on several times when leaving camp, loses prime and runs who knows how long before it stops, still pumped after reset just not as well.............

FreshCab is the only mouse deterent that I use. Has been completely effective for the past 6 years.

The plumbing issue has me scratching my head. I will ask a friend if he has any ideas.

Here are some ideas. The hot lines could be warming up the cold lines. If you let it run for a while then that should stop. Are there check valves in your system to prevent the hot water from entering the cold water lines? Did you perhaps hook something up wrong?
Leaving the pump on should not cause it to run needlessly unless you have a plumbing leak. As a matter of fact, that is how you check for plumbing leaks (presence of, not location of). You have water in fresh water the tank. You have all the taps off. You turn on the pump and wait. If it runs occasionally, you have a leak somewhere.
I hope this helps. If all else fails, take it to a dealer.

There may be a check valve in the system that prevents backflow of hot water from the water heater into the cold water lines. Take the panel off on the back of your water heater and look. Check valves are notorious for sticking or leaking by. If you have one, replace it and see if that makes a difference. Also, the winterizing bypass valve for the water heater could be leaking by. That would be the next one to look at if there isn't a check valve problem. Remember that the presence of a valve in the system does not mean that said valve is functioning correctly.

Thanks Loneoak and mike06081969, as soon as I get a little more time I'll be checking for that check valve, my local rv shop said the same thing. On the mouse subject folks have used peppermint oil with some success also........

If anyone suggests Bounce sheets, forget it - they don't work.

Have you checked out this thread? http://www.crossroadsowners.com/foru...ead.php?t=7983 It seems similar to your issue.

I use peppermint oil all year. I get those little plastic cups that single serving fruit comes in, and a cotton ball, put about 5 drops of peppermint oil on the cotton ball, and place them in several places in the living area and basement. Have not seen signs of mice since I started with it.
I would check the bypass valve first, then the check valve second.

Thanks DavisK and sleepyT, I will probably give the peppermint oil a try, I actually have had the by-pass valve in my hand and it looked fine to me and I think I located the check valve on the lower entry to the tank also..........

Here are a couple of pics of my HWT install, I believe the check valve is screwed into the tank on the lower line, partially obscured by the by-pass valve.............

By looking at the picture you posted, the bottom valve is in the correct position, but the valve above is NOT in the correct position. The handle should be perpendicular to the pipe. If the handle is in line with the pipe it is attached to it is in the open position, if the handle is perpendicular to the line it is in the off position. This could be your problem.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.

The bypass valve is definitely on. You want that one turned "across" the line to be off. Your picture doesn't show a valve on the top which I find odd. That would be cold water in. Valve on the bottom is either broken or is designed to look like a pointer. If so, sometimes they point to off. So...turn bypass off and see if that resolves problem. If not, "point" bottom valve up leaving bypass off of course. Does that make sense?

Does not make sense Tim, a lot have only 2 valves anymore, I know I do. What SleepT said is correct. At our rally he should me the proper way and it was just like his post.

X2 on the freshcab. That's the only thing we've used and no problems with mice.

I agreed with both sleepyt and Harley. Bypass is on. Needs to be off. Try that first, and if did not work, try other valve. It is not a tee. Which makes me wonder if could not be a three-way valve. They often "point" to off. Not saying it is, but wanted to include the possibility in case turning just the bypass off did not solve his problem.
Mine has three valves. Keeps you from filling hwh with anti freeze.
