On our trailer, the PO had used bungee cords instead of the steel strap with buckle. The buckle is missing the removable pin or whatever is supposed to be in there to clip the other end of the strap onto.

What is the missing part exactly? I'm guessing it needs to be just short enough to let the buckle go over center and pass through its wire bail, but long enough to have to squeeze through, and stay on the other side of the bail once its there? A blunt nail of the right size ought to work?

I've seen where someone switched to the regular style of threaded rod holddown. I'm okay with this strap as long as it works. Does it?

The strap works but it does wear out sooner or later. I did go to the threaded rod type and have been happy with that set up. The whole idea is to keep it from bouncing around while traveling.
