I recall I had the same problem about a year ago and put some electric circuit grease on the prongs inside the socket on the back. Did that again last night and that seems to have cured what was wrong for now. I'm still a few months away from doing any travelling so I'll wait and see if it acts up again.
I was going to replace with a Tekonsha controller. They seem to be reliable. Has anyone used this brand?

Yes and I recommend the P3. It has diagnostics that are very helpful.
Example it reads out the brake current. I check before every trip. With a double axel trailer that has four wheels braking the current is about one amp per volt applied. The P3 also reads out the voltage applied.
Well, Santa was a little short on toys again this year, still getting lumps of coal in my stocking, so I thought I would step up to the plate and got the Tekonsha P3 from ETrailer. It'll be here in a few days.
Thanks for the info and hopefully I'll have safe braking this summers.
