I want a generator to run my AC. The model number on my TT spec sheet gives me no information. How many watts does it take on average to run a 15,000 BTU AC?

Elevation will enter in to it, but I would say 2800, to 3000 would run a15,000.

That's what I figured. Costco is selling a 2000 w 1600w continuos generator. People are giving it good reviews but I need something that will run the AC. It's too HOT in Fl.

3,000 watt inverter generator will power it but not from the 15 amp plug in the generator, you need to use the 25 amp plug which outputs more power. (obviously depends on generator).

I have a New Holland Inverter 3500 and it powers the AC on the 25 amp plug - keep in mind that 3500 is the peak, it probably outputs under 3000 on average. Price was about $800 here in Canada - probably about 200 less in the USA.

That Champion above looks like a good deal.

I use my quite Honda 6500IS, It will run everything I have on the Redwood. They have a wheel chair ramp carrier that fits on the hitch in the back and I only need a short cord to plug in.

I need to research the Champion because the 2100 was sold at Costco and they discontinued it. I went online and they had very bad reviews. Are you having luck witht te 3100?

I just bought the Champion 3100 from Costco. Haven't fired it up yet, but I'm hearing good things about it. It was 799 in Canada.

I will stick with the hondas, but as many of you know I own 2, 2000 watt units. So I may be bias
Purchased them after a year of research.
I have no complaints and like the flexibility of 2 units. Plus they are easy to toss around.

I am a Honda owner myself and they are hard to beat. You will need the companion to run a 15000 btu AC. They are portable and managable, weight wise. They are more costly them most gens available; however they have a great history. There are a lot of choices out there so do your homework. Good Luck.

I would get at least a 2500 to 3000 watt unit - Honda or Yamaha. You will pay more but I think they will last longer.

I bring along a 4000 watt Yamaha generator when I dry camp - only twice a year.

When you run the generator you'll be powering up the converter and the Air Cond. My Ac pulls about 14 amps and the converter will pull 2-5 amps to charge the batteries and power up DC lights (I monitored the current draw on our progressive EMS remote indicator as we turned on stuff).

I Purchased my Yamaha generator in 2003 and it starts on the second pull after being in storage for 5 months. Always add gas stabilizer to the gas when I fill the tank.

I can't emphasize this enough if not using everyday.

I have a Honda 3000 Watt inverter that I purchased for work. I really wish I had bought (2) of the 2,000 W units. I'm too old to toss around a 130 lb. generator.

if you are going to use a conventional generator, not a honda or yamaha inverter type, then you will need a 5500w or better to run a 15,000BTU ac. the conventional type portable generators use two stators to produce 120/240 power. 120volts on each legg of the 240 plug, plus a neutral and a ground. each 120 leg is rated at half the total wattage available(ie 5500/2=2750W). when added together you get 240v 5500w. If you have 50amp service your AC unit will be on 1 of these 120v legs, if you have 2 ac units 1 is on one leg and the other would be on the other as to not overload 1 side, or balance out the panel. If you have 30amp service everything is on 1 leg, and you will be using an L14 to TT30 adapter. this adapter only alows 1 leg of your genny to power the trailer so you dont get 240v at the trailer. Either way a 5500w genny will only give you 2750W of power to your trailer. the starting amps in a 13,500 BTU ac unit can be as high as that then settles to about 1200W running. Its all about the starting amps and realizing you only get to use half your generator. I have a Generac 3250 and it will not start my AC.
